AMA – The roguelike that is played using only two buttons: Right and Down! ~ mc2games

Hello, r/NintendoSwitch!

My name is Kiko Martínez, together with my sister Maribel we founded the indie studio mc2games in 2020. Our objective is to create games that blend strategy, puzzles, and narrative!

Since up to now we have only been two people, we carry out most of the functions between the two of us, but in general, my sister Maribel takes care of the development part while I take care of the game design and admin stuff.

In addition, Natalia, a great 2D artist who helped us in the development of Right and Down has recently joined our small studio and is working with us on its sequel, Right and Down and Dice.

We just published for the Nintendo Switch Right and Down, a deep roguelike and card game that is played using only two buttons! Here is a link for the game with a launch discount 🙂

My idea for this game was to create a turn-based roguelike that could make the player make interesting decisions even with only two buttons to use. On each turn, the only decision you can make is to go right or down. This decision, which at first seems trivial, hides a great tactical depth. Will you try to dodge that high-level monster or fight it to get the artifact it hides to its right? The new artifact you just got gives you 5 coins every turn, but only if you move down, etc.

We also have published a series of escape room games on Steam and Nintendo Switch, currently on sale:

Right and Down is our first game outside the escape room area and it had a great reception on Steam so we are currently working on a sequel!

I will be here today to answer any questions that you have about Right and Down, our escape room games, or our studio!

EDIT: The AMA ended! Thank you everyone for your questions, it has been really interesting hanging with you and talking about games!

If you want to ask us anything else or follow our games, you can follow us on Twitter: [https://twitter.com/mc2games](https://twitter.com/mc2games)

Thanks!
Kiko

I enjoyed this on the steamdeck

Happy to see it come to the switch so more people get a shot to play it.

  2. GravyDog666

Just watched the trailer and it looks like a petty rad time! What was the inspiration for the game? (other video games, IRL games, etc.)

  3. UnicornLasagna

Very interesting concept, really dig what I am seeing

My question… I love the Switch and achievements but these don’t mesh great with no system level solution. So I rely on devs porting them ingame. Would I find the (18) Steam achievements in-game in the Switch port somewhere? If not… Any thoughts towards adding them in an update?

Regardless … Best of luck with your release!

The change of genre between escape rooms and roguelite is quite big. Is there any other genre that is tempting you?

  5. zerochaos

No questions just wanted to say I’m excited to play this. The switch is the perfect console for roguelikes.

I’m always curious as to how small development teams decide on a software environment and workflow. Can you speak to which software you used and what the development experience was like?

  7. Looks nice but the game is not available in my region (Japan) 😔

  8. Oh interesting. My girlfriend has some interest in games but has health issues that make complex controls hard on her. Two buttons… I can pitch that =)

This is dope! I can’t help but also think this would be a killer mobile game!

  10. Electronic-Union9640

My brain can sometimes only handle 2 buttons, will check this out

  11. HopefullyAHero

Will there be a PlayStation release? Interested in this a TON but PS is my main console

  12. next_door_lord

I am curious about the sequel, are you going to use dices to decide the movement or for artifact effects? Looks like adding complexity can kill the only two buttons attractive

Hi there! First of all, I want to thank you and the developers for such amazing escape room games. They are so challenging and it’s so rewarding when you finally figure out a puzzle!

I wanted to ask if you all have plans to create another escape room game? I just mowed through all of them on switch and I’m craving more lol!

No questions from me. Just wanted to say that I think it’s super cool you’re a sibling duo. I’m really close to my sister and I think that’s awesome that you founded a studio together. Right & Down looks exactly like the kind of concept I love in a game and I’m looking forward to trying it out tonight! I’m really glad you did this AMA. Just bought it and all of your escape room games on Switch. 🙂

I don’t get a ton of time on my switch lately but took a chance on this on Sunday afternoon. I have gladly wasted 5 hours in the last couple of days on it. Great game,
super fun. Been recommending it to my buddies who are bunch of hades/slay the spire fans.

Is the lock mechanic only opened after you beat the first run through? Or do you get more locks as you progress/beat the game. My one complaint is the artifacts feel too tied to the world you are in, wish there was more overall generic ones.

Also the side power system feels like puzzle quest on the 360 and that hits a special nostalgia place for me.

Overall if any of you are on the fence and like stuff like ring of pain or slay the spire give this a chance.

Thank you so much for this game! My girlfriend isn’t into most games but both the aesthetics and simplicity of the controls were huge draws for her. We’re having fun with it and that’s a rare thing even among Switch games!

Also – even as someone who’s played tons of games it really does have a depth to it that scratches the itch of trying to optimize every path through a level. Amazing game for 8 bucks!

  17. Sweatty-LittleFatty

Great game. I recently bought it and found It really cool and addictive. Any plans for a sequel or a DLC?

  18. I know this is a tough question for a roguelike, but what’s the approximate playtime to see all the content?

  19. accidental_tourist

I would be very interested if this team decides to make a multiplayer game. I can imagine some local coop, strategical and unique can come from you guys 😉

  20. kfcdinnerroll

Kudos to the developers for their gameplay direction but are we all going to ignore the elephant in the room that the top status bar, art style and even the font are almost identical to slay the spire? Surely this was a major “inspiration” for the game?
