In Nintendo’s press release for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Wave 4, they state the following: “Returning characters from the Mario Kart series will be added in future waves.”

So we know that we have at least 2 more characters coming to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe that are from Retro Mario Kart titles (which probably means Tour as well). Here are the following unique characters that are currently not in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe:
• DK Jr. (SNES)
• Diddy Kong (Double Dash and Wii)
• Petey Piranha (Double Dash)
• Koopa Paratroopa (Double Dash) NOT IN TOUR
• R.O.B. (DS) NOT IN TOUR
• Funky Kong (Wii)
• Honey Queen (7) NOT IN TOUR
• Wiggler (7) NOT IN TOUR
Furthermore there are additional new veterans from Tour that could apply as well:
• Pauline
• Dixie Kong
• Kamek
• King Bob-Omb
• Nabbit
• Captain Toad
• Chargin Chuck
• Monty Mole
• Peachette
• Fire Bro.
• Ice Bro.

• Dr. Mario (I’ll count him as separate but it’ll be the only one given he has his own series)

The announcement said more for packs 5 and 6. Don’t expect any more than that. If we get more, it’ll be a happy surprise, but don’t get your hopes up.
And yeah, it’s definitely going to be a character that is in Tour. They seemingly proved they’re porting Birdo from Tour with all the recolors yanked from it.
I want Kamek, especially given he was supposed to be in 8 (and other previous ones) to start. Diddy Kong is filed under ‘most likely’ for me.

Diddy Kong would be the most exciting, given his own history as a ‘Kart’ mascot. Also, I suspect the movie (and Nintendo, more generally) are going to begin getting the DK cast more front and center for the masses.

My preferences would be, in order, Diddy, Dixie, Funky, Petey, Paratroopa, ROB, and honestly, I want to see Captain Falcon. FZero courses and karts are already in the game. And I want to see a Splatoon *race* course.

Didd Kong is a must, it’s a crime he’s not in. I’d argue for Bowser Jr. As well, despite the Koopalings.
DK Jr. would be amazing as he’s OG, but I might prefer Funky Kong if we were to get a second DK pick. People want Peety Pirhanna so I could see it. Kamek would be cool.

Hot take: Donkey Kong Jr makes the least sense for one reason.
Since it’s mentioned that Cranky Kong is the Donkey Kong from the arcade game, the current Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr are the same character.
Now for a character that I’d love to see return; I have plenty of fond memories for Mario Kart DS, so ROB returning would get some interesting reactions.
Just copy over the Smash roster.
