Bros too humble

He is the Hitchcock, Orson Welles and Charlie Chapman of video games. He is also the Spielberg of Video games in the sense of the business acumen and development and guidance of young talent.
The man has been massive since the advent of modern video games.
HillarysRussianBot
hes the Miyamoto of videogames
loztriforce
Before he or I dies I feel the need to thank him for so much.
AnUncleAtNintendo
I’d like to think of Spielberg as the Miyamoto of movies.
tino768
Cue the Mr. Incredible meme.
garfreek
They shouldn’t! Hasn’t made a sound decision since the GameCube days! Every hit game he’s worked on got that way despite this mans interference!
(Especially the Zelda franchise! )
htisme91
I know Miyamoto is really humble, but he should dislike that. The man will have a better legacy than Spielberg. The amount of longstanding franchises he created is ridiculous and almost never be matched again.
Walt Disney is a closer comparison, but Miyamoto is a way better person than that.
djkhan23
Spielberg isn’t the GOAT undisputed director
Miyamoto is the GOAT game developer/person
Big difference I’d be insulted if I was him too
robo_octopus
Honestly Miyamoto incomparable. He opened a door the art form can never go back through. He is almost more akin to an inventor than an artist, like Tony Iommi to metal music or Andre Breton to surrealism.
Gamerprodontatme
Yeah understandable Miyamoto shouldn’t be comparable considering Miyamoto on a way higher level of entertainment.
TheVibratingPants
Journos and audiences tend to do this, which is approximate an icon of one industry with an icon of another, and it’s probably more detrimental than it is helpful. I think it’s part of our pattern-seeking lizard brain, where we have to establish similarities between things to understand them better. They do the same thing with Hayao Miyazaki by calling him the Walt Disney of anime; a term which he infamously hates.
But Miyamoto is so much more than just the Spielberg of video games, or any other sort of famous creative mind of any industry. If Spielberg, Lucas, and Welles could have a combined impact, that would be closer to what Miyamoto has done for video games, and even that is not a sufficient summation of what he’s done.
Realshow
Fair enough.
Hatless_Shrugged
I mean if he’s anyone he’s Walt Disney
sirmombo
I’ve never seen or heard anyone call him that lol
TheEclipse0
This is exactly what the Spielberg of video games would say.
TheAuraStorm
Yeah I agree, he’s the Dark Souls of videogames
CBBXD
No one here knows what they are talking about. Miyamoto is only a game designer and producer (he hasn’t done art in decades.) He doesn’t do any developing/programming himself and is more of an interfering mentor than a passionate figure. Please celebrate Iwata, Koizumi, Tanabe, Tezuka, Sakurai hell even Masuda over this hack.
He’s more akin to the Walt Disney or Stan Lee of Nintendo, a personable figurehead that gets auteurship for being around.
milkstrike
I’ve never heard of him referred to as such nore should he be
MisterBri07
Who the hell has been calling him that?
LetItRaine386
Nintendo is like a 1000 year old company
chuckdeg
he is Miyamoto and the king of video games
SuperToxin
Lmao he’s way better than that tbh
wheres-my-take
well nintendo has become the Disney of video games in a lot of branding senses.
iiiSushiii
I always thought Studio Ghibli / Miyazaki was the main comparison.
Zealousideal-Ruin862
It is what it is
Naiko32
he’s more akin to Walt Diseny imo
melvin_0809
I seriously consider him more as the Walt Disney of videogames. Do you know this Disneyland statue of Walt Disney and Micky Mouse? How sweet would be something like this in Super Nintendo World, but with Miyamoto and Mario 🥲
saul2015
They are the best and worst aspects of Apple and Disney of Video Games

Spielberg is the Spielberg of video games. Never forget Boom Blox
kdkseven
Lame comparison.

Miyamoto is a game director, and he was certainly instrumental in character design and production of video games created in the 80s and 90s. That being said, the best parts of Nintendo games came from the teams who operates under his leadership. The best zelda items, puzzles, and enemies are all designed and created by designers; simply approved by miyamoto. He’s great in some respects, but he gets way too much credit for revolutionary game design that he simply checked off on when it came to his desk.
schmattywinkle
Video games are not movies, more like, and should be evaluated by their own merits. Miyamoto is closer to Orson Welles or something.
Lank_The_Doge
Spielberg is the Miyamoto of Movies

Can we just build this guy a statue and honour him?

Honestly Nintendo is great at what they do.
Nothing they do except fire emblem (and I guess Pokemon but that’s not really Nintendo) feels like stereotypical Japanese media, it’s all cartoony but not like anime.
Zelda comes close with the high pitched moaning sounds that some npcs make but most characters use Western swords and armor.
Gameplay-wise nothing is so hard that it can’t be beat but there’s always a few extra super tough challenges for the more apt players.
They’ve got a unique style and I love it.
Remarkable_Custard
Humble as fuck. What a legend. Truly is … the Spielberg of Video Games.
MrMunday
Mario 64 was so so so so ahead of its time, some games till this day still can’t handle a 3rd person camera properly, and he (and his team) got it to work in 1 go, no references, no patches.
They way latiku was used to explain the camera system, how they handle Mario going through tight and narrow areas, how it gives you small amounts of freedom to adjust the camera without making it so free that the user is disoriented…. Pioneering all that on top of still one of the best 3D platformers of all time (again, first attempt, no patch)
And I’m only talking about one of his games.
He is a man of legend.

What about his Mexican non-union equivalent, Spielbergo?

When Miyamoto replaces all the weapons in Nintendo games with Walkie Talkies, then you can call him the Spielberg of video games.
Zealousideal_Car_532
“Spielberg of Nintendo”? That would require miyamoto to actually like story.
Newbie-Tailor-Guy
Nintendo has really dropped in quality of both products and games. It’s really saddening. They’re holding themselves back with hardware limitations, and they’re really not taking risks with their titles anymore, and not supporting the titles that make money. Honestly curious how Miyamoto himself feels about it all, given he used to be a pioneer in gaming, but now it is just more of the same.
ApeMummy
Spielberg has made plenty of mediocre movies, Miyamoto makes almost strictly bangers.
Baliath
if I was one of the best to ever do a thing, a true pioneer, icon and living legend in one of the largest industries worldwide I’d also take offence in being compared to literally anyone.
NarrowConfidence908
I wouldn’t want to be compared to Steven Spielberg either.
Si1entBills
Spielberg is overrated anyway, legendary directors like Stanley Kubick and Alfred Hitchcock is where it’s at.
Boomshockalocka007
Miyamoto remembers how E.T. crashed the video game world. Can you blame him for not wanting to be associated with that?
