I disagree with the reviewer when he says that you must be the correct level for a zone or you’ll get “murdered instantly.” In Octopath 1 at least, you could be quite a few levels below the recommended for the area. The combat is pretty deep, and there are lots of ways to mitigate incoming damage and control what the enemies can do, especially with the break system. In fact, some of the most fun I had on my first playthrough of OT1 was going into an area I was massively underleveled for and battling my way through extremely hard battles for good loot.
And then the reviewer said that there’s a lot of grinding in OT2, which I really doubt. It seems to be structured similar to OT1, which required actively avoiding random encounters unless you want to be overleveled. I genuinely don’t understand what he’s doing that he felt he needed to grind at all, unless OT2 late game has drastically higher level requirements than OT1 for some reason.
IGN puts out some decent video reviews, but this isn’t one of them. He doesn’t have any meaningful insight, and he doesn’t do a good job outlining the actual differences between OT1 and OT2.

I enjoyed the first one, but it sorta bothered me that all the stories were so disjointed, that they didnt interact with each other much at all.
does 2 have more of a ‘we’re a party’ vibe?

This is the problem with IGN they just crank out reviews and hand out assignments to any shithead that claims to know how to write and play videogames. This is an awful review and goes in direct contrast with many of the other reviews out there.

Reviewers need to stop saying “I” so much in a review. There is a difference between a critique and an opinion and I feel like so many of these kinds of reviewers are more focused on making themselves a celebrity than analyzing a work.

This review leaves out a lot of details that make the sequel better than the first. Nintendo Life’s review is better.

It’s so similar to the first one, that if you enjoyed that one, then pick this up if you have nothing else to play.

It has a little something for everyone. 8/10

Just from playing the demo, there are several differences from the I not mentioned in the review:
– The graphics are improved, especially lighting / cloud cover
– He talked about the day/night mechanic but not how it’s a new thing
– The characters that follow you now give extra passive abilities
– The Latent Power system
Regarding enemy weaknesses, he mentioned being annoyed at not guessing them but one of the classes has a passive to reveal them.
Regarding the story, NintendoLife’s review tells about changes from the 1st one: branching paths, a different system for the merchant, crossed-story paths with multiple characters.
IGN’s reviewer said we might as well play the 1st one again, well he should have…

If IGN gave the first Octopath a 9/10, a game that I thought was a 6 or 7/10 at best, then I’m definitely passing on this one.
