The Zelda timeline is definitely an example of âWill you shut up already?â that Nintendo was going for in regards to fans clamoring for it. No, it doesnât make perfect sense, and there are things in the games that contradict the way we see it.
The âFallen Heroâ branch is horse-hockey. Genuinely, I donât understand why Link losing in a singular game creates an alternate timeline. Wouldnât that mean everytime he loses another timeline is created? Heck, Ocarina isnât even one of the games where thereâs some sort of cutscene when you die. Majoraâs âMoon fallâ ending isnât canonical, and neither is Zelda IIâs âReturn of Ganonâ screen.
Further, Iâm glad that BOTW (at least in English, and further to some extent in all languages with the DLC and Amiibo items) said âScrew the timeline, weâre doing what we want.â Fans got what they wanted, and Nintendo is choosing creativity and storytelling over adhering to something that clearly wasnât planned to begin with.
One final note: I dislike that the original game title âThe Legend of Zeldaâ doesnât really have any sort of meaningful relevance in the current iteration of the timeline. It just sort of happens, and thereâs not really an in-story reason that itâs âspecial.â Which is a shame.
