The Zelda timeline is definitely an example of “Will you shut up already?” that Nintendo was going for in regards to fans clamoring for it. No, it doesn’t make perfect sense, and there are things in the games that contradict the way we see it.

The “Fallen Hero” branch is horse-hockey. Genuinely, I don’t understand why Link losing in a singular game creates an alternate timeline. Wouldn’t that mean everytime he loses another timeline is created? Heck, Ocarina isn’t even one of the games where there’s some sort of cutscene when you die. Majora’s “Moon fall” ending isn’t canonical, and neither is Zelda II’s “Return of Ganon” screen.

Further, I’m glad that BOTW (at least in English, and further to some extent in all languages with the DLC and Amiibo items) said “Screw the timeline, we’re doing what we want.” Fans got what they wanted, and Nintendo is choosing creativity and storytelling over adhering to something that clearly wasn’t planned to begin with.

One final note: I dislike that the original game title “The Legend of Zelda” doesn’t really have any sort of meaningful relevance in the current iteration of the timeline. It just sort of happens, and there’s not really an in-story reason that it’s “special.” Which is a shame.

  3. Totk happens after botw? I honestly thought it was a prequel lol. I have to catch up before may 12
