Could you imagine the world we’d live in if this was actually the reasoning behind all remasters rather than “higher resolution for an easy $60”

  2. ApprehensiveCarpet2

What about Parasite Eve, Final Fantasy Tactics to name a few?

  3. this is my main criticism:

It deserved more than “remaster to make it playable”.

This is a really good J-RPG, with many neat ideas a fun gameplay and a wonderful OST by Mitsuda (and on Spotify/APM/Deezer etc. btw if you like relaxing musics to work).

The OST aged quite well IMHO, not the point of my comment but the game was overshadowed so much by other J-RPG and, more importantly, the amazing Chrono Trigger, it deserved a proper remake: If Trials of mana received a remake so should have Chrono Cross

    On my top remake/remaster list:

    * Chrono trigger: HD-2D remake would be awesome
    * Xenogears
    * Vagrant Story
    * Secret of mana
    * DQ VIII, a soft remaster would be great, the latest 3DS game felt more like a demake than a remake lol, but still enjoyable
    * FF Tactics (long rumoured to be in preparation)

That’s an excellent reason to do so imo! Gaming preservation

  5. critical2210

You could still buy brand new PS1 discs from square enix up until a few years ago. So yeah, I’d say they care about preservation

Chrono Cross never came out in Europe/Oceania either, so some people got to play Cross for the very first time thanks to this remaster as well.

  7. Chrizzee_Hood

Give that treatment to the original Zelda please!

They were more worried about Cross being unplayable in the future, and not the weird ass [Japanese only Satellaview,](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellaview) Radical Dreamers?

If it wasn’t for people holding on to those copies they downloaded, or bought from a kiosk in Japan, and didn’t overwrite those cartridges, it would be lost to time like many Satellaview games, like a Kirby one for example.

Either way, I’m grateful it ever got re-released, and getting Radical Dreamers was a CRAZY surprise!

Honestly though, if they truly cared about preservation, they would re-release this game on every platform like FF7 from here on out, but honestly would never happen, let alone not lose the Source code for this, and potentially many other games.

I know this is controversial and the mods might smite me, but this concern is why emulation needs to exist in some capacity. Developers and/or publishers will not consistently ensure that games are available and archiving and preserving old properties that are not fortunate enough to receive remasters is important.

Luckily, in this case, you can now legitimately purchase and enjoy the game.

Nice now remake Xenogears and Xenosaga please

  11. I would prefer a new chrono sequence rather than the endless remakes

I picked this up on day 1, but I still found it very unplayable. I loved it back in the day, but I found myself having a hard time getting into the remaster. I’m not exactly sure if it was just where I was at that point in my life or what, but I just couldn’t get into it.

  13. Probably the silliest “thing” in the history of gaming is the fact the only real 10/10, heavy hitter classic JRPGs to remain never getting any sort of significant remake or remaster are Chrono Trigger and Xenogears. Add a Link to the Past too. 3 legitimate top 5/top 10 game of all time contenders and they seem happy to leave them stuck 25 or 30 years ago.

  14. It baffles me how nearly all of squares remasters are shit

Even those final fantasy pixel remasters, while better that previous ports, still have gigantic issues that could have easily been fixed, like the font, ff6s colors, etc

  15. Sogeking33

Funny bc I never played the original and bought it on a whim (on ps1) a few years ago and had a blast with it

  16. BluePeriod_

If that’s the case, Brave Fencer Musashi when?

I recently learned (via a Jim Sterling video) that a lot of Japanese developers find (or at least found) the term “JRPG” offensive.

Like, Japanese developers thought they were just making “RPGs”, but the West felt the need to define Japanese games as somehow different than ours, and eventually the term JRPG was used diminutively as an insult. Crazy stuff.

    EDIT: [link for the interested](https://youtu.be/WpDyONiXSjM)
It’s kind of insane how casually racist the Fez creator was to the Japanese fan in one of the clips shown, and just the general “we’re inherently better than you” attitude a lot of devs had in those clips about the Japanese industry and people. Eventually, anything “good” about RPGs was considered “Western” and anything “bad” about them was considered “Japanese”. Just gross in retrospect.

Played the original on my ps2. I have an emulator on my old phone with this game on it. I can safely play the original on my phone, but I’d love to have a remaster. This game was ahead of its time.

  19. runeasgar2

Xenogears and FFXIII would like to have a word with you.

  20. SpliTTMark

What about radiata stories .. no one even knows about it.. why not bring that game back

Or give us xenogears or vagrant story or star ocean

  21. ThisdudeisEH

Hasn’t this been out for almost a year?

  22. ZestycloseSpace7561

I found the remaster pretty hard to play and I loved this game in the early 2000s

  23. TotalSpeech

Translation: we noticed a shitload of people download it on ROM sites, and realized we were literally leaving money on the table.

  24. Travis5223

This headline being posted in a Nintendo forum is the ultimate irony.

  25. Pelthail

Wish they thought the same about Chrono Trigger.

  26. djmaglioli91

Makes sense Chrono trigger has been ported left and right, but Cross never saw that kind of attention. This remaster is the first time it’s been available officially on something other than PlayStation.

  27. Redditor_Since_2013

In 2002 my young family moved into our new home, I was 8.

My little sister and I were exploring the backyard, and hidden in the bushes was a brand new copy of Chrono Cross, and a $20. 🤷‍♂️

I was never able to beat the game, it confused me. But I’ve got a soft spot for it

  28. Tjoeb123

Now I wish they would apply this same philosophy to other titles, like the PS4 version of Star Ocean Second Evolution, Star Ocean Blue Sphere (official translation on NSO perhaps?) or Bahamut Lagoon.

  29. branch-is-dumb

I may get hate but chrono cross wasn’t that good while on the other hand chrono trigger is an absolute masterpiece and should be remastered

  30. epicthinker1

this is a terrible remaster that had very little improvement to playing it on the PS1.

  31. I really hate how remaster has replaced the word port.

  32. SpudimusPrime89

Meanwhile, Chrono Trigger is in a major need of a re-release.

  33. Evilcon21

And yet they should do the same for thier more obscure and possibly underrated games.
