Any Wario Land fans in the house? This is a game progression chart I mapped out for Wario Land 3. Down the centre is the main path from the first objective (the grey chest in N1) all the way to the final boss. Branching off from there are all the optional treasures that enrich the experience! Each level has four treasures to find – grey, red, green and blue. Some treasures give Wario new moves; others change the shape or layout of other levels. For such a seemingly open game, I was surprised to note just how linear the main path is.

It’s difficult to devise a metric to measure non-linearity in a game, but viewing a graph like this gives a fair idea. Are there any other games you think it would be interesting to see such a chart for?

  2. I really liked Wario Land 1 and loved Wario Land 2 and 4, but i never played Wario Land 3… i should change that.

    Great work!

I just finished playing Wario Land 1 and am working on Wario Land 2. I’ve beat the final boss but looking at the map afterwards looks like there are a lot of levels and alternate paths are left to be accessed. I’m still trying to figure out how to access them. How do you think Wario 2 compares to Wario 3?

I was surprised when I started Wario Land 2; It has a completely different level of difficulty compared to the first one.

This game was so hard growing up, and I’m honestly still so unsure how I managed to get every treasure over the years

Oh wow, can’t believe I’m seeing a mention of this game in 2018. The first Game Boy Color game I got with my system while my brother got Link’s Awakening. I thought I got the short end of the stick at first but ended up being blown away by the challenging puzzles, colorful visuals, and laugh out loud humor. I seriously love this game and feel like it never got the recognition it deserved. The metroidvania style of exploration and unlocking new areas is still something that I feel like was done really well in a more conventional platformer.

  6. I like this chart, it really displays how it’s a non-lineair platforming game. This was one of my first games that I played and could call my own as a kid. I wanted a Mario game at first, but the store owner was a bit confused and gave Wario Land 3 instead. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised once I played this.

    This is pretty cool!

Wario Land 3 is my favorite in the series and I wish Nintendo would make a new one!

    Very well-put together chart, thanks.

I’ve beaten this game twice, but never 100%. This should help me.

i dunno man, never played Wario land 3, but Wario Land 2 was my first gameboy game ever, and i don’t remember it being this needlessly complicated, sure there were several hidden levels and treasures, but man this thing looks like the flowchart to a very complex computer program

Great flowchart! I remember finishing the game a lot of times but I always got stuck in the same stages trying to complete it 100%. I never found a guide for it at that time, maybe I should try to finish it again as an adult and see if I will be stuck in the same chests.

this game was insane. I think I liked wario land 2 more, but this was the one I ended up finishing 100% as a kid.
