Nintendo

Today i learn Nintendo owns 1.75% percent of bandai namco.

No other gaming company besides nintendo has that much power over bandai namco. That doesn’t mean nintendo runs bandai namco, or have total power at all, bandai namco is still on their own term.

But that does explain why bandai namco has become nintendo’s go to studio for development support, they basically pay them extra to do so.

They don’t have “power over Bandai Namco” at all. 1.75% is nothing no matter how you look at it. The way you phrased that implies Nintendo could in any way alter the course of Bandai Namco’s future. They couldn’t. No more than a fan could.

That explains the og metroid prime 4 and the recent pokemon spinoffs like pokken and snap. Also smash.

  4. DoubleDThrowaway94

Now Nintendo, use that influence to get me some damn Gundam games on Switch.

It’s quite common for Japanese firms to own bits of each other. Often a way to cement a joint venture or other partnership. Whereas in the US or Europe it might be the first step towards seeking influence or even a takeover, in Japan it’s really the corporate equivalent of being super polite and giving a gift.

  6. [deleted]

That just means they own shares not that they puppeteer Namco or anything

  7. Miraj2081

1.75% is nothing. They owned, what, 49% of Rare at the time of the Microsoft acquisition? Not quite the same thing, but even so, less than 2% is probably just a gesture of solidarity more than anything.

I think Bandai Namco just happens to have the locality and manpower Nintendo desperately needs, especially considering their experience making big HD projects for Japanese audiences.

  8. SelfRepair

ah yes, the 1.75%. what devastating power nintendo holds

  9. runtimemess

Holy shit I’ve been calling them Namco Bandai for years and years and years.

  10. Caliber70

good. Code Vein + Scarlet Nexus on nintendo when?

  11. Didn’t Sony partially own Square Enix in a similar way back in the day? Hence the tone of SE exclusives. Or was it Sony just assisted in funding some of their games back then?

  12. [deleted]

They need to use that stake to port HD versions of Xenosaga

  13. MiamiSlice

Nintendo doesn’t pay them extra. They already own the shares. They don’t pay anything to keep those shares.

  14. MiamiSlice

Fun fact: New Pokemon Snap is developed by Bandai Namco

  15. [deleted]

God hopefully this means we get a Tekken game on switch that would be fucking killer

  16. Bl4ckb100d

And still there is no Tekken on switch wtf Nintendo

  17. ALAN113D

Not really all they do is develop some games for Nintendo

  18. HarlockJC

They owned these for decades like N64 days if not before

  19. Bamco is awesome. I hope their partnership continues

  20. Comrade-Cohaay

Well then why the hell aren’t dark souls 2 and 3 on switch?

  21. Paladin5890

    r/acecombat

    AC7 on Switch confirmed. (/s)

  22. starlulz

They also own a portion of the Seattle Mariners MLB team if I remember correctly

  23. somesthetic

Well, Nintendo should tell them to release Ms. Pac-Man on the switch.

Two different namco collections with zero Ms. Pac-Mans!

    That’s just my 2 percents.

  24. Mr-_-Sir

Only indirectly related, but I’d really like to see Bandais version of Metroid Prime 4 once Retrostudios Prime 4 is out 😀

  25. I remember when this happened. Nintendo bought about 20% stake in Bandai and it was heavily speculated at the time that Nintendo was trying to buy them out (despite Nintendo stating they had no intention of doing so). If I recall correctly, the merge with Namco was in part Bandai’s attempt to reduce Nintendo’s stake in the company.

  26. HammerKirby

I assume this was bought around Mario Superstar Baseball and Star Fox Assault were coming out if I had to guess. Both developed by Namco around the same time. Don’t know how it would work with Bandai and Namco merging together later on though

  27. Teuton1331

It is a.very small percentage. To see if N has real power over BN find out if N has a seat on their board of directors. I am a retired entertainment software entrepreneur and IBM software director of marketing, so I know how corporations are run behind the scenes.

  28. IveAlreadyWon

Where’s DBZ Kakarot then Nintendo? Get your shit together.

  29. Emperor_Ham

Back in the 2000’s nintendo was planning to buy Namco via a force buyout by it’s shares but the japansese government stopped it from happening. Later on, Nintendo and Namco made a deal where Nintendo sold most of it’s shares and Namco gave Monolith soft to Nintendo.

  30. GrapeJuse

So Nintendo has 1.75% of a say in dark souls too huh

  31. IMTHATWE1RD0

Then why is there no TEKKEN ON SWITCH
I truly hope there will he tekken because mk11 on switch is a thing

  32. [deleted]

Honestly, I’d be pretty happy if Nintendo absorbed Namco. Bring that quality standard to Tales games while giving Nintendo SoulCalibur and Tekken, which would go a long ways in filling in some pretty obvious holes in the Nintendo line-up.

I’d like Sega and Capcom to come too, but Namco is the big one.

  33. Lord-Tunnel-Cat

Bandit Scamco is such a scummy company IMO

  34. YouYongku

What about Nintendo on gamefreak(Pokemon) ?

  35. oh-no-he-comments

This thread is 90% people who don’t know how business works arguing with people who don’t know how business works.

  36. youcanotseeme

That makes me even more confused to why there aren’t more tales games on the switch

  37. SpiritualTear93

Yeah just look what a good job they were doing with Metroid Prime 4

  38. Houeclipse

So that’s why Project X Zone 2 got Nintendo characters

  39. mrglass8

I think think this is particularly interesting because Bandai-Namco is one of the few companies that I would consider to truly be in the same industry as Nintendo.

Sony and Microsoft are in the gaming industry by virtue of their electronics business. Bandai-Namco and Nintendo are in the gaming industry by virtue of their toy and arcade businesses.

It also is interesting because I would consider Bandai-Namco to be second only to Nintendo in regards to their skill at pure gameplay development. Again likely due to Namco and Nintendo both starting in arcades.

It’s just to be in the annual shareholder conference.
