Advance Wars Reboot Camp is receiving Review-Bombing on Metacritic? (Debate)

I make this question to make some debate, since I´ve seen that the overall score from players on the Reboot is 5.0 on Metacritic

[Metacritic Advance Wars reboot camp](https://www.metacritic.com/game/switch/advance-wars-1-+-2-re-boot-camp)

The critics reviews give a high 8.2 overall score to the game. Nevertheless, the user score gives the game an awful 4.9. (two days before, it was a 7.8)

The negative critics are mainly to the design that many people consider “ugly” or that the units design affects the gameplay with confusing models. I´ve seen also some people on youtube criticizing the game for this. What´s worse is that at some videos I´ve shared my experience, (which is ositive) and mentioned that for example, the game has voice acting (even if it´s not the best), and the authors of the video told me in comments that they didn´t know about that, what makes me think that they haven´t played the game.

So I´ve brought this issue here, because I disagree with these people, sure the game it´s not a 10, but I assure it´s not a 5 tho. And also, idk why some people hate Advance Wars Reboot Camp that much, the game is enjoyable, the IA is better and doesn´t cheat as the originals, the voices are doubled to many languages (not perfectly as ´ve said before, but makes the characters more memorable) and there are lots of easter-eggs, and incorporates online mode (even if again, it´s not the best)… (For me the game would be a (7.7-8.5) So what is the point of the hate to this game of franchise for being so punctilious?

For me the worst thing is that the franchise could disappear if the game doesn´t sell well thanks to the bad player reviews that feels sometimes unfair.

I think this debate is interesting because I think review bombing is increasing more and more these days.

>UPDATE/edit: **SEEMS THAT DE ADVANCE WARS BOMBING IS BEING EXPANDED TO OTHER GAMES:** Source:[https://gonintendo.com/contents/19984-nintendo-s-2023-releases-see-a-wave-of-review-bombing-on-metacritic](https://gonintendo.com/contents/19984-nintendo-s-2023-releases-see-a-wave-of-review-bombing-on-metacritic)

**The games affected includes Fire emblem engage, Kirby´s Return to Dreamland, Metroid Prime Remaster, Bayonetta Origins and Mario Kart Booster course pass.** Seems the hate avalanche is spread over lol

Just ignore them. User reviews are pointless.

  2. Judge216

The problem with user scores is its either a 10 or a 0. I never even look at them because they are not useful in any way. I find critic reviews to give a reasonable overview of the quality of a game though so just stick to that.

Review bombing accomplishes nothing and is just a big hive mind of assholes who have nothing better to do.

In the end most people who game and don’t spend their life on the internet would never even think to check or care about what a group of trolls is doing on a user driven review site.

Every new post about game ABC (that people think is great or terrible) being review bombed is as interesting as posting about the sky being blue occasionally.

Time to grow up video game industry fans you can do it.

Sorry never played Advanced Wars so this rant is out of place but so sick of what this fandom is becoming when hard working people are putting countless hours in to fill your lives with entertainment. Yes entertainment not life or death, you don’t like how a company does business don’t support them but stop there.

  4. User reviews suck. Future Redeemed is one of the highest rated games (or DLCs in this case) released in 2023 so far at a 91, but for audiences? Low 7s.

User Reviews are usually filled with a lot of trolls and console warrior weirdos.

  5. iWantToLickEly

People don’t like a game and reviewed it as such, what is there to debate about?

    >I think this debate is interesting because I think review bombing is increasing more and more these days

This shouldn’t matter. The game is made to be played, not made so you can look at a number posted at some website

The criticism about units being hard to distinguish is valid. I’m usually checking if an enemy unit is a normal Tank or Medium Tank because in the map view they look too similar. Same with missiles and rockets.

About the voice acting, I feel it’s mostly because the voices didn’t align with years of headcanon (Like people saying Eagle’s voice is too deep while Sturm is bad because he doesn’t sound like Darth Vader). I think the delivery is mostly good, Andy was perfectly casted, Drake’s voice cracks me up and I adjusted to the other voices very quickly.

If anything, I’m upset at NOA for putting Spain Spanish voices into the Latam version without the option of switching in-game, forcing me to change the language of the whole console before playing. We got so many good Latam dubs in the latest years…. why do we revert to this now?

Nothing of that deserves review bombing, that’s just edgelords wasting their free time shitting on a console and game they don’t own because they don’t know any better.

  7. Wait, why would this be review bombed *now*? It‘s been out for a while, has there been some weird new controversy I‘ve missed or something?

  8. it_hurts_all_over

Honestly? The graphics remind me of the updated Link’s Awakening that came out a few years ago. I don’t see anything wrong with them.

  9. TheSimRacer

A bunch of games seem to be getting review bombed. Kirby RtDD was around 8.8, now it’s 5.4. Bayonetta Origins was around 8/10, now 5.6. Metroid Prime went from 8.8 to 8.4, Xenoblade 3 DLC from 9.4 to 7.6. Mario Kart wave 4 is at 3.8.

The takeaway is that user scores don’t mean anything.

  10. sideaccountguy

Some Nintendo games started to get review bombed recently, Xenoblade 3 dlc among other are sharing the same fate. User reviews means nothing though they are usually trolls reviews

  11. worldsinho

Who cares what other people think?

Most of the time, other people are wrong.

The game is fantastic, I love the models and graphics. Everything is great.

  12. autisticswede86

I think this is doomed to fail and we wont see advan e wars again flr a long time sadly

  13. Lol I just finished Advance Wars 1 last night, a game I’ve beaten a handful of times over the years. My main thought upon completion was that it was good, but that models could sometimes blend together, making the map hard to read (especially that last map with all the cities).

Surprised (though I guess not really) people could nitpick such a thing to review bomb it. It’s a problem for sure, but the package overall is no way a 5/10.

FWIW when I replay the game in the future I’ll probably go back to the GBA version (hopefully on NSO by that point?)

  14. I wouldn’t react that way, but I don’t like the artstyle either. I also think it’s way too expensive for being a not too fancy remake. I’ve decided to finally play the DS versions instead.

  15. Expelleddux

The art style is a downgrade from the original but giving it a 5 is not a serious rating.

  16. ReeReeIncorperated

Metacritic and opencritic are unreliable af.

  17. Neo-Chromia

The game is great, even though I’m looking through nostalgia-tinted glasses.

The voice acting is eh, but at least it’s added and you can kinda skip through dialogue anyway.

The gameplay loop is still all there and it’s a very faithful remake.

Some of the models are a bit similar imo hence some confusion although I’m also relearning the game so it could just be that. Yes the jelly-ish mobile style of the units is a bit sad, even from pixels it feels like a bit of a downgrade, but it’s still a very fun game to play and I can’t seem to stop thinking about the next strategies while I’m working…

I’d give it a personal 8.5/10. The jelly units and mobile design brings it down along with the inability to play the second game straight away (I assume I have to complete the first campaign?) Cos I’d love to play the 2nd game again

  18. spadePerfect

I’ve started ignoring metacritic and looking only at Opencritic. The recommended % along with the average ratings seem like a good solution to me. Metacritic is a meme at this point.

  19. People are probably bombing a lot of Nintendo games right now because Zelda is right around the corner, and will probably be the highest-rated game of the year.

This tends to happen anytime Nintendo releases a highly-anticipated title. It also happened around the releases of Metroid Dread, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Xenoblade 3, etc.

  20. Jazzy_Beat

I say the main problem is the horrible price

  21. DonTeca35

Once upon a time Sony released an exclusive named “Days Gone” IGN, Metacritics, reviewers all gave it a score of 40-50. First off I never listen to these companies, second the reviewers weren’t really gamers or at-least reviewers that did full game plays. They were YouTubers with big followings.

If you go watch reviews from people with smaller followings that buy their own products you get the real review & feel of the game. Anyways they game was a solid 8/10. You have to do your research & try for yourself in order to know

  22. Dopesmoker402

I mean user reviews are always garbage does not matter what for its 99% garbage. Often the critic score give a more nuance view which represents the situation better

  23. The ratio of negative reviews on Metacritic (People actually writing why they feel the game is bad) to the amount of negative ratings is suspicious. Out of the 56 people who gave Advance Wars a red grade only 6 of them actually wrote why.

  24. im_Heisenbeard

Oh no, people are giving their opinion on the game, and their opinion is being treated as absolute. Woe is you.

  25. inuart19

User reviews give a low score to “your game” = user reviews are always gargabe

Critics reviews give a low score to “your game” = critics reviews are always gargabe

    ooohhh the hypocresy

  26. MelodicAssistant2012

Review bombing is lame and definitely reinforces the notion that you shouldn’t trust them very much. However, I’m also a little annoyed with how many people in here are saying stuff like “5 isn’t a serious rating” or otherwise just acting like any sub-8 rating isn’t legitimate. Some people did not enjoy these games as much as you did.

Personally, I felt like there was basically no story. The character design was nice, but the characters themselves were super flat and dull. The game was pretty ugly. The music was not great for me as well. The gameplay was alright, but for me wasn’t enough to carry me through, and I had to power through to finish the games.

I’m very happy that this series has a lot of fans and that they’re happy with the remake, and I’m interested in seeing a modern incarnation of this series, but let’s not pretend that all criticism is ‘review bombing’ even if, in this case, a lot of it seems to be.

  27. BigTuna109

Like every other game gets reviewed bombed on metacritic by losers. Pay them no mind. Threads like this only validate them. Everyone over the age of 7 with more than 2 brain cells knows there is nothing worth reading in metacritic user reviews.

  28. necrochaos

The game is very mid. I’d rate it a 5 or so if I gave it a rating. The graphics are cute the battles are fine. But the battles are also long and overdone at some point. With fog of war returning when you move and enemies hiding and stopping your movement the game gets very long in the tooth.

I didn’t play the original but I’m having problems getting through the game. It’s slow and plodding. The characters talk to much and never really say anything.

I was hoping this was more Valkyria Chronicles or Mario + Rabbids or even X-Com lite. Instead it’s another turned based game that lacks innovation or soul.

This feels like Wargroove all over again. Enjoyed the fiery five maps and slowly set into mediocrity.

I hope to finish at least the first game in the series. However I can’t play more than one map at a time or it burns me out.

  29. UniversityRich

I have never once taken overall user score into account when looking at a game on metacritic. I’ll look at critic reviews then maybe read the description some users gave it but never the overall number🤷🏿‍♂️. Just me tho

  30. ShadooTH

Pretty obvious that this is a direct response to Nintendo cracking down on literally everything as of the past few days.

  31. No_Indication3496

I didn’t read reviews nor watched many gameplay videos. I haven’t even played the original version. But I’m so happy I bought the game, one of the funniest and gameplay rich games this year for me.

  32. The art style IS ugly, people giving their opinion about what they like or not in a game, If the criticism is justified, it’s not review bombing. Since the beggining I didn’t liked the new visuals.

  33. SomeGuyWhoNeedsStuff

The worst part about the game is the price. It’s overpriced for what it is compared to other remakes like Metroid Prime, in my opinion. The graphics and animations are simple, and there’s just not a whole lot to it that the originals didn’t offer.

What’s more, in this day and age, there are new turn-based games like Into The Breach which scratch the turn-based strategy itch a bit better with better balance and mechanics, and at a much lower cost.

I bought it with a voucher, and a Costco Switch Shop card deal, so I paid more like $45 for it (which is laughably the same price I paid for Tears of the Kingdom preorder), and at that price, it makes a bit more sense. No huge regrets, but It’ll likely sit on a shelf after this week.

  34. ElectricJetDonkey

The only things I don’t like is the sheer gall at trying to charge *$60* for a remake of a GBA and DS game and that it’s not a new game, and the AW series is among my favorite of those Nintendo eras.

Not that I’d care enough to review bomb it. Price bullshit aside, this is introducing the AW series to a new generation and might lead to an actual new game.

  35. rushiosan

It is receiving a response for all of its glaring flaws, which aren’t justifiable on a $60 product that was delayed for over a year. I’m glad we still have non-paid opinions.

  36. tendonut

I haven’t played this game, but this is not necessarily sounding like “review bombing”, just people legit not liking the game.

IMO, review bombing is when people who have never played a game, want to punish some entity directly or indirectly related to the game, so they deliberately tank the reviews.

Example: Hogwarts Legacy. Leaving negative reviews not because they played the game and didn’t like it, but because they want to punish JK Rowling.

  37. AnonymousAnonnnnn

Review bombing is pretty dumb behavior but industry critics hesitate to give almost anything a score lower than 8 out of 10.

You can’t trust generic critics anymore than random unverified reviews.

Best option you have is look up people on YouTube who have actually played the game you’re looking at through to the end and put effort into their analysis.

That’ll be more effort and time invested than any shallow take a random user name or game journalist will waste your time with.

  38. Public_Cold_5160

This means war! Let’s start bombing it up! We must defend this title!

  39. Odie_Odie

For anyone wondering I picked it up on release day and it as great as they were in decades past. They are good games.

Haters are always going to hate I guess.

  40. johncitizen69420

Finished advance wars 2 the other day and had an absolute blast with it. Im not crazy about the art style, but its nowhere near as bothersome as i thought it would be from the trailers

  41. spinzaku97

I’m betting it’s because of the recent GitHub fiasco and this is just the “homebrew” community lashing out.

  42. Koala_Operative

Regarding the edit: to be honest, Engage was a step back from Three Houses 🤷🏻‍♂️
