I first started playing Pokémon when I borrowed a friends Red Version in the fourth grade. I got as far as the Elite Four before they decided they wanted it back. Shortly afterwards Yellow Version was released and I was able to get that for myself.
Since then I have played and out hundreds of hours into each of Silver, Crystal, Ruby, Leaf Green, Diamond, Platinum, Heart Gold, Soul Silver, Omega Ruby, Sun, Shield, Brilliant Diamond, and now Scarlet. I missed out on Black and White and the sequels because I was busy with the Marines and gearing up for a deployment to Afghanistan.
Despite sinking thousands of hours into this franchise, o have never once personally caught a shiny aside from the scripted Red Gyarados. In fact, I’ve only ever knowingly encountered a shiny once before in Leaf Green. It was a yellow Rattatta and it was encountered right at the beginning of the game before I had Pokéballs. It was a sad day. Recently, I found out after the fact, that a white Tatsugiri I ignored was also a shiny.
Well, today it finally happened. I was making my way back to a Poké Center to heal up after catching a bunch of new Pokémon to complete my Pokédex (254/400, getting there) and I saw it. I almost ignored it thinking it was just a regional form or something since I didn’t know shinies showed up as shiny on the overworld. I didn’t have Pachurisu at the time though so I decided to go catch it. Imagine my shock when I saw the twinkle. Gave it the old Spore and False Swipe combo from Breloom and tossed a Poké Ball at it. Success.
I’m super excited I’ve finally caught my first shiny but I think I may be more excited about what I’m going to do with it. My little brother is obsessed with Pikachu and the Pikaclones so I’m going to use Bottle Caps to Hyper Train this guy and then vitamins to optimize its EVs and then trade it to him without telling him it’s shiny. He’s going to love it.

Ayy that’s nice. I was in a similar boat (though only 10-15 years of playing), finally got it standing in line at my first ever vgc. And I think it’s really sweet of you to give it to your little bro, I’m sure he’ll love it
So proud of you. The odds being ‘ever’ in your favor. Sometimes us gen1 og’s take awhile to catch up to shiny odds. I purposefully SR for a shiny Piplup, took over 1k SR
This was the most wholesome thing ever. Congrats. I was the same, played literally thousands of hours across all gens from the very beginning, never encountering a shiny until a horde of spinda in Y version graced my screen, with one of them donning the ever repulsive, baby poop green. I jumped a the chance, beat the crap out of those scrub spinda and caught my green boy.
