I thought it was interesting to share. The (slight) majority of Switch owners in the US is female.

That’s a bit surprising, though not extremely. I’m a big gamer but my gf has more hours in Animal Crossing (around 800) than any game I’ve ever played. I think Nintendo first party appeals slightly more to women than men.

  3. The ratio seems pretty much equal across the board, which is pretty cool but Nintendo games are just so cute they appeal to everyone. The communities around them, even the online games are far less toxic than games like cod, csgo etc

The women’s share between all consoles and PC has been catching up with the men population in recent years which is amazing. About women % being higher on switch than other consoles I guess it helps that Nintendo’s 1st party line up it’s more diverse when in other consoles it’s more prominent the FPS multiplayer online games which are extremely toxic towards them.

Edit: lmao GaMeRs have arrived to the thread.

  5. brbquesting

I’m happy to be part of that percentage, I guess.

I love the replies, especially from people who cannot fathom the fact that women like videogames. “It’s for their kids” “it’s for their husbands” LOL 🙄

I know a lot of female gamers, and believe it or not a lot of them don’t disclose their gender online to avoid being harassed.

My wife probably has more hours than me on her switch than I do all devices.

I feel like the portability aspect of the switch, and it being a great way to play games that are extremely popular with women and young girls such AC/Pokémon/Splatoon/Stardew Valley etc is why the Switch is such a huge hit with girl gamers.

Almost every female in my life whether it be family members, friends, co workers, classmates etc that has played video games for the most part had the DS/3DS/Switch.

  9. JoeTheHoe

Checks out. Most women my age (25) I know have a switch, especially since 2020.

  10. locoghoul

The portability aspect is probably more appealing towards most people. Sitting in front of a tv nowadays is almost a luxury

  11. It blows my mind people still think gaming is a purely male space when clearly is hasn’t been.

Even back in the early 2000’s playing MMOS. Most guilds were filled with both genders and it was never weird. The reason you don’t remember hearing many women talk on Halo 2 is because if they did you’d have a bunch of prepubescent children screaming obscenities at them.

The world hasn’t shifted, but people are still shocked about normalcy.

I know so many woman who have a switch just for Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, and it’s awesome

We bought a Switch for the family in 2020. I now have an OLED that is mine… all mine. In my 30s mom of 2 and I mostly play hand held and it takes me back to the days of playing my brother’s Gameboy.

  14. I totally bought a 2nd switch because my wife was hogging it all the time after Animal Crossing came out. I don’t get the TV, but luckily it is a Switch lol.

I feel like they are accomplishing what some Sony PS games want to do. I can’t wait to see more games that take in female interests more and try out new dynamics. Whatever they are doing, they are approaching it correctly.

  16. ConfusedConnect

i generally had no idea so many girls game now. Would be nice if there was a little more, but these are some pretty impressive numbers.

Most of the games I play are exclusive to Nintendo consoles, so this tracks. I don’t have anything but Nintendo stuff, and I’m only considering even buying something else for the Star Wars games. Also, my male friends who play video games tend to have several consoles, but most of my female friends who play only have a switch.

I’m a female who is closer to 60 than 50 and I have a Switch, which I bought to play BOTW.
While I have also played Animal Crossings on it, the most hours I’ve spent on it have been playing games like BOTW, Skyrim, Witcher 3, and now Tears of the Kingdom.

I also have a Wii, the original NES that I bought back in 1990, and a Playstation 2. I play Switch games with my grandchildren and pack my Switch in my backpack to play on my lunchbreaks.

I am married. My wife likes watching me play but she isn’t a gamer at all.

And for a good reason! We’ve been blessed with so many otome game localisations those last couple years. Seems like games targeted towards female audience is finally being taken a bit more seriously! Most of my otome game loving friends are female, every single one of them has a switch because it’s just *the console* for quality localisations atm.

Also most of my female friends do share a love for Zelda, Pokémon and the FE series.

Makes sense. My gf took over my switch years ago but the titles and genres seem to be her jam and Nintendo overall seems less focused on machismo kinda games.

If your into platformers, puzzle games and RPG’s it’s got a pretty impressive catalog and, not to gender stereotype mind you, suits my gf’s taste more than muscle men with guns/swords or consistently male focused antagonists and narratives in hyper violent games.

  21. alexann23

I’m a woman with a switch 🤷‍♀️ I’ve always been into video games though so?

  22. The-true-Memelord

Of course everyone’s only talking about how women love stardew valley and animal crossing etc and not how many more women are gamers than people think and not just for those types of games..

Anyway I’m a woman/girl/person/creature and I’ve been a gamer ever since I was a kid, I’ve owned pretty much every nintendo console after and including the DS, I think. And I like what I like, any genre. Just not most shooters, I guess. ^boring ^imo ^don’t ^@ ^me I’ve played a lot of games.

Nintendo is amazing at what they do. Truly the best game/console company and I will die on this hill no matter how money hungry they may get in the future or anything else that might go wrong. They focus on what matters the most: fun, quality and originality(?) :] But mostly fun.
    ^No ^hyper-realistic ^graphics ^needed. ^I’d ^just ^go ^outside ^lol

  23. Bluebomber_24

It was a female friend that was PIVOTAL in getting me my Switch.

  24. AtsignAmpersat

52% vs 41% and 45% isn’t that much of a difference. I’m actually surprised the PS and Xbox percentages are that high. Either they don’t play cod at all or they keep themselves on mute or in a party. I barely hear women on there and when I do some jagoff says something shitty.

  25. FlygonPR

Xbox (and Sony to some extent) has historically bordered on ridiculous with the super conventionally masculine and “adult” marketing. Turns out that if you market too much to people that were conditioned since childhood to like “toughness”, you will have a less diverse user base.

  26. fuzzygreentits

That’s just like, the actual US population split.

I guess it means everyone owns a switch now lol

  27. dippyC0327

Me and allmy homegirls got Switches. Makes sense tbh.

  28. Aaaandiiii

Oh yay for girl/lady/woman representation in gaming. I’m happy to finally live in a world where being a girl gamer is not a rare oddity!

  29. Brodes87

Jesus, all the people falling over themselves to deny this is true or justify that it’s just some anomaly.
