Looks similar to missions in Ingress. Wonder how it’ll translate to Pogo. My guess is any POI (gyms and stops) can be used in routes. So example, Route XYZ: spin stop 1, take gym A, spin stop 2, and so forth.

Congrats, you are in an area that supports the new test feature. Routes lets you create a path from pokestop to pokestop that other people can see and follow. According to niantic, it impacts experience gained, a fair amount. It is also meant to help rural players, so I suspect their over all intent is to use this to recalibrate where pokemon spawn in game, allowing commonly used routes to have higher spawnjng rates, while likely lowering spawning rates in non-route and low used route locations to free up capabilities.
