When I was younger I regretfully skipped the Wii (and Wii U), getting more into PC gaming at the time because of WoW/Valve.
Been watching a lot of Scott the Woz recently (particularly this video: https://youtu.be/u-5YfrqVduw) and it seems like the Wii and Wii U had a lot more community features in it and a lot more “stuff” that wasn’t games.
I appreciate the Switch but I feel like it’s missing something like what the Wii/Wii U had. I mean even the 3ds had something with Streetpass. The Switch just has none of that, feels very sterile in it’s presentation of the software.
I’m sure a lot of factors and lessons learned from previous consoles made Nintendo make the decision to not include anything of the sort on the Switch but it would’ve been nice to have.

Idk about community features but I wish the switch would track our play time with as much detail as the 3DS did
Those systems are said to have a lot of Nintendo personality in them that’s really missing with the Switch. I have memories of having a lot of fun with streetpass on the 3DS and the exciting time of walking around the system in my pocket to see what all new people I randomly connect with. There’s also memories of times when my mom would ask me what the weather would be like, so I would quickly boot up my Wii, go to the Weather Channel app, and tell her. Also, the Everybody Vote Channel was a fun little time waster to see how others felt about random things.
It’s little stuff like this that I do miss, and feel like I took for granted thinking these and other similar features would always be on future Nintendo systems. I look at my Switch and wish it had some of these (and music in the eshop).
honestly same tbh, i miss those quirkily apps we used to have on the older systems but i know lots of people didn’t like them so i see why they haven’t brought that aspect over to the Switch
Yeah, personally I didn’t play on the WII much so I missed out on a lot of things (I was too young and too stupid to understand it lol) but I did play a lot on the 3ds. It’s better than the switch in my opinion due to the preinstalled games. Though I didn’t interact with many community stuff, i’m getting in to that now though.
Hopefully their next console will have more personality and won’t be what’s basically a corporate shell of a console. Of course I don’t hate the switch or anything.
Personally I don’t really see the point of stuff like this. Miiverse was an unmoderated travesty.
The Switch is great because it starts up immediately and gets me into my games immediately. No unnecessary fluff. It’s fine the way it is imo.
if this happens they better bring back flipnote cause that ruled my life in 2011
I wish it had a message board feature, messages between friends, and an achievement system.
Love that we still don’t have Netflix on it but we have Hulu and YouTube.
Honestly if all they ever did was bring back streetpass and all of its features for every Nintendo console in perpetuity I would be satisfied.
This is the issue that has been talked about ever since switch was released. Nothing has happened. Nintendo is not willing to make anything.
I just want themes that aren’t the equivalent of day and night mode.
The Wii and Wii U’s community features were highly unfiltered. Personally, that’s why I believe the Switch doesn’t come with any features like that. I agree there should be a pack-in game and some extra features, especially with themes.
No.
I prefer the very focused aspect of the switch, I don’t want it to be a do-all machine, I have my phone and my computer for that already. The wii had features that were neat but kinda unnecessary, like the weather app.
The biggest thing I miss from other consoles is the review system the 3ds had, it was very simple and good to get a very quick overview of the different games offered.
I just wish the Switch had messaging for friends and some other kind of community feature. Maybe something like a screenshot and clip sharing hub.
I really miss Street Pass
Me too, i guess they did not put there becuz of hardware limitations, next nintendo console being closer to the ps4 in power they will probably do it now
One of the best parts of the Switch is that it doesn’t have all that bloatware installed on it. The Switch does what it’s supposed to, play video games.
What is with this sub downvoting information? It’s getting irritating
When nintendo included a bunch of extra things like the ds and wii u it’s because they probably expected the system to fail and wanted launch customers to be happy and leave good reviews.
I want folders *on the home screen*
I don’t. Hate it when you buy something and it’s full of rubbish software you never use.
First time I ever heard of someone wishing for MORE bloatware.
It’s missing a lot of features. Playing music and streaming music for one, especially since it’s supposed to be a device you use “on the go”.
100% agree.
I definitely understand those who simply want the Switch to be a system that “plays games and nothing else” and think of those pre-installed software, features, and “charm” as “extra bloat that nobody cares about”, but I think it really adds to the charm and personality of a Nintendo console. Streetpass, Miiverse, music in the Mii Maker, eShop, and home menu, the presence of Miis, etc.
I just wish people in this sub weren’t so snarky about it acting like people wanting those aspects from previous systems are “weird” and say “I bought a console to play games! Why are people complaining about this?” like they’re better than those people.
Hard disagree here. The beauty of the Switch is the simplicity in the UI imo. I love how when I turn it on it’s just straight to the games, no fluff, no bloat.
Nintendo knows they don’t have to give effort in that sort of thing to make $$$$. Ready for my downvotes!!!
Street pass was cool for sure. I had a lot of fun with that. I’m a little surprised Nintendo hasn’t expanded on that idea with smartphones. I don’t think it’s something that needs to be on the switch, but maybe just through smartphone compatibility.
Miiverse was pretty cool at the time. I think it makes total sense why Nintendo does not want to do that again.
FYI: The Wii U actually had 2 GB of RAM, but **HALF** of that was reserved for just the OS and built-in apps and was permanently inaccessible for games. The Switch, as far as I know, does not have such a large restriction related to RAM. The Switch’s OS, being as basic as it is, is definitely not using a whole gigabyte of RAM, allowing for access to almost all of the Switch’s 4 GB of RAM.
I can only imagine the amount of games that wouldn’t exist at all if the Switch compromised RAM for cool UI features. I think Nintendo made the right call software wise, when dealing with the hardware they chose.
It’s not a huge thing but for a portable system, the lack of video apps is very strange. When traveling I’m not going to take a tablet and another device so I almost never travel with my switch
The pre installed games and community features on the 3Ds and Wii U were so amazing I miss them dearly
Nintendo should have made an alternative to Miiverse. So many of us want it back. With clip sharing built into the system, it only makes sense.
Be careful you’ll have a lot of Nintendo fans saying « it’s a handled console not a tablet you’re supposed to play video games and nothing else »
Switch’s lack of personality sadden me a lot, I bought a 3DS and a wii U when they were released and I miss how much you could interact with other players on older devices, for free… I loved the miiverse, I liked to have Netflix and other media on those consoles, to have an internet browser, to chat with other ppl
I liked to find the miiverse bottles in zelda TWW’s ocean, I liked to have those cute moi saying hi on the main menu of the wii U with all the drawings
Having friends on the switch is absolutely useless, you can’t even invite them or ask them if they wanna play with you.
I loved as a teen to being my 3DS everywhere to meet ppl on streetpass and fill my place and complete my puzzles, it was a nice add
Many of us do, the switch is a soulless husk in terms of the Wii and Wii U regarding these aspects.
Part of that is because Nintendo designed the core features with Handheld and Docked mode in mind. Docked players wouldn’t benefit from Streetpass, so it was cut. Likewise, a lot of launch window titles didn’t have LAN multiplayer, assuming players would use local play in docked or tabletop mode.
I think if they anticipated the Switch Lite from the start, more social features would have been added, similar to what the 3DS had.
I really couldn’t care less about any of that, what I want are the games.
Shh you aren’t supposed to mention the fact that the Switch has less features then the Wii on this sub… the Switch is perfect!!!1
