15 Villain Arc units take on the Hoenn Champion Stadium [Pokemon Masters EX]

0:00 – Vs. Sidney: EX SS Hau / EX Lucas / EX SS Brendan

7:48 – Vs. Drake: EX Classic Blue / EX SS Diantha / EX SS Dawn
9:26 – Vs. Steven: EX Courtney / EX Colress / EX Shauna

The next update will mark the end of the game’s Villain Arc series with the addition of Galar VA part 2. I can spend a lot of time discussing my thoughts about the individual stories, but I think we can at least agree that the VAs introduced some really good sync pairs with them.

Wanted to use 15 of them for this week’s CS clear. Here’s how each battle went and the sync grids used:

Vs. Sidney: EX SS Hau / EX Lucas / EX SS Brendan – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=016200048300&s0=3&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=13010602&t0=11111&g0=AAECAwQFBggJCwwNDg8QERscHSMkJSY&v1=009801078500&s1=5&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=21010101&t1=44444&g1=AAECAwQFGRobHR4iJSgpKzQ&v2=001901038100&s2=5&l2=140&r2=5&p2=0&a2=21010101&t2=44444&g2=AAECAwQFBggKExYXGCYpKyw

This was easily the most annoying clear to get for this run since Sidney’s Absol hits quite hard. Even this successful run had things holding it back such as those two syncs that both missed the crit. The idea here was SMUN spam with Hau’s passive, with Lucas adding in a Dragon Wish to proc an extra one.

Vs. Phoebe: EX SS Cyrus / SS Hilbert / EX Red – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=002001064900&s0=1&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=13010602&t0=11111&g0=AAECAwQFDA0ODxASFxgZGyAhIiMpKissLS4&v1=019402049100&s1=2&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=12020102&t1=11111&g1=AAECAwQFBggLDRESFBcaGyMlKSo&v2=000000014300&s2=4&l2=140&r2=5&p2=0&a2=21010101&t2=44111&g2=AAECAwQFBgcJDA8QExQVFxocHiEl

Lowkey think this would’ve been an easier clear if I just stuck with using Cyrus’s Dark Void the entire stage lol. Red does give SEUN and SS Hilbert helps out with Sp Def debuffs.

Vs. Glacia: EX SS Misty / EX Hugh / EX SS Kris – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=014700062600&s0=5&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=18040502&t0=44444&g0=AAECAwQFBgkMDxEUFRYXGBsnKCs&v1=011002013400&s1=5&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=18046402&t1=44111&g1=AAECAwQFBgcICQsOEBUYKS4v&v2=001801024500&s2=2&l2=140&r2=5&p2=0&a2=21010101&t2=44111&g2=AAECAwQFBggLDREaHB0eISMmKCo

SS Misty’s sync nuke is pretty good, and SS Kris is one of her best partners as she completes her buffs as well as gives her rain. Hugh completed the team here with his flinches so that SS Misty can have the space to set up.

Vs. Drake: EX Classic Blue / EX SS Diantha / EX SS Dawn – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=015802071902&s0=1&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=13010602&t0=44444&g0=AAECAwQFDA0ODxASFxgZGyAhIiMpKissLS4&v1=002102014200&s1=3&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=13010602&t1=44444&g1=AAECAwQFERITFBYZGx8hIyQv&v2=011602048800&s2=2&l2=140&r2=5&p2=0&a2=21010101&t2=4141&g2=AAECAwQFBgcICQwNDxESGhscHSAlJyor

Definitely the easiest clear here thanks to Diantha’s Rock Zone. Got Soften Up 1 from Blue’s grid so that I didn’t have to worry about missed sync crits.

Vs. Steven: EX Courtney / EX Colress / EX Shauna – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=019100060100&s0=4&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=21010101&t0=11111&g0=AAECAwQFBgcIExYXGRwdHyIjJSYn&v1=022200032300&s1=3&l1=140&r1=5&p1=0&a1=18040702&t1=4111&g1=AAECAwQFFRgZIyUpLC0uLw&v2=013900065200&s2=5&l2=140&r2=5&p2=0&a2=17010201&t2=4444&g2=AAECAwQFBgcKDRARFBcaGyYpLA

This clear used both both physical damage up and stronger debuffs to make Courtney’s sync as strong as possible lol. Kinda nice that the +6 Def let the team tank the sync even with the stronger physical damage too.

  1. If I had to rank the VAs in terms of story, I’d go-
    1. Unova- Love the character work between Hugh and N, with Hugh finally forgiving somebody from Team Plasma, showing his growth from his rage. Also loved the plot with Hilbert and Genesect; I always thought of Genesect as a powerful being, but the idea that it’s just scared and confused at being revived with a cannon on its back is just so much deeper given what Genesect is, and Hilbert helping it was wholesome. It shows N had a real impact on Hilbert’s mentality towards Pokemon.
    2. Johto- Getting to see the entire Johto roster (sans Chuck lol) was incredible, and I always thought that would be the standard moving forward. Guess not, rip. Silver’s interactions with Giovanni and Lance were great too. I also like how Morty is hanging with Lance and Elite Four- it helps connect the Gym Leaders and E4 to each other in a way we don’t really see in the main games.
    3. Kanto- Really good starting point for the VA, greatly established Giovanni as more than a mafia gangster, and the fact that he showed it doesn’t just have to be a positive bond to get sync stones working is so cool to me.
    4. Hoenn- I really like Steven and Zinnia’s rivalry- or rather Zinnia just teasing Steven all the time- so this was a fun one. The main plot is a bit eh? I do love Archie and Maxie reflecting on their past and the revelation they used to work together- it adds so much depth to their rivalry now- but the whole dark sync stones and Courtney and Matt nearly destroying Pasio was a bit meh to me.
    5. Kalos- This and Alola share a problem where the actual villain of the generation barely gets any screentime and as a result you’re just fighting… turncoat grunts. Yikes. What makes Kalos better, however, is a follow-up on Diantha’s conversation with Lance about how to be a more involved champion from an earlier event, and we see that in full force here- it really helps out her character considering many say she’s the worst champion. Also, Lysandre supposedly scalded two people to death. That’s heavy. The relationship between Emma, Anabel, and Looker is also cute as well. Detective family ftw!
    6. Sinnoh- You can tell this one was rushed to get out so they had promotional material for PLA. The plot is really simple- Cyrus is taking a nap, so everyone on Pasio randomly conks out, so they go wake him up and tell him to stop being a doomer. I guess the admins interacting with the main cast was neat. Admins don’t get enough love in Pokemon games, and nowadays there are none.
    7. Galar- So far I’m not that interested. They double down on Rose’s obsession with solving an issue that won’t be relevant until way beyond the future, which I understand, but it’s manifested in a weird way. Neat idea to toy with sync stones as essentially batteries, but the conflict just doesn’t have much impact here. I’m expecting that by the end of the arc, they’ll convince Rose to stop by having him battle them himself, and he’ll realize what joy it is to do so. At least Rose’s theme is utterly amazing.
    8. Alola- Wow this one was a doozy. Lusamine and Guzma barely even get any screentime, Faba was just trying to get a new job, so who did that leave us with as the main villain? Nobody. We just had some turncoat Aether foundation workers. At least we got some alts for characters who never got to have them before? Heck, we didn’t even get a decisive battle theme for this gen. At least we got to see Nanu be added to the detective family as the grumpy uncle.
