Yo don’t need a poffin to get him excited like that. You have to interact with your buddy a certain way every 30 minutes

This is my favorite thing to do! It’s hard to explain but I’ll try.
Basically you have to accumulate 32 points with the actions with your buddy. Each action has a 30 minute cooldown except for the walk 2km. Every “easy” action is worth 1 point except walk 2km.
Right now it’s really easy to trigger this, since walk 2km is walk 1km during the event. So you only need to walk 10km and do 2 easy tasks to get it excited.
Warning: the excited period doesn’t last the whole time like a poffin. If you let it sit too long, the blank extra hearts will turn into just one.

No need of poffins, easiest ways is to tickle then and a photo every 30 minutes and at the two hour mark it will get excited
Other way is to tickle, feed and photo and once outside walk a bit, battle a gym ( even if it doesn’t participate, just need to be in the party, once it’s half the meter done, feed them again, it usually gets excited and you can win more hearts (this is what i do to clear the shiny Jirachi talk that all for 10 best buddies)

This has happened to me the last two days. Not sure what I did, just assumed it was some sort of event. Don’t question it, if you still have your poffins just get out and battle/walk etc

I think mine get excited when I feed it raspberries then snap shot and play together and then walk for 3 hearts and then it becomes half candy from there.. I think idk, kinda works for me, though tbh I get multiple poffins a day from scanning pokestop challenges so I don’t do it anymore.

I’m kind of baffled at how you got it with just those hearts.
I usually start the process before I start walking, so I don’t miss out on a candy.
First, feed the buddy, then play with, screenshot, and battle one of the team leaders, immediately exiting the fight. It counts.
Then set a timer for 30 minutes. After that, play with, screenshot, fight one of the team leaders.
Repeat till the buddy is excited.
I don’t feed everytime since if I don’t, I can feed it again after three hours when it’s excited and get two hearts for it.
I also put my buddy into the teams for the rocket grunt fights, fighting gyms or raids – when I can afford to put in one I can’tvreally use -, since you can do one of each fight each 30 minutes and all of them count.
With those it can work faster. Without any extra fights it usually takes two and a half hours.
Also, when it’s no longer excited you can usually get it back quite fast, you just have to keep interacting to keep it up.
Sounds like other people have found easier ways to do it…

If you keep petting your buddy, feeding him, taking his photo, walking with him and/or battling with him… Every interaction will give you “points of happiness” (you can actually see it happening, it gets happier and happier on that spot that shows you that it’s excited).
Get enough points and it gets excited. But note that all interactions (except walking) have a 30 minutes cooldown. Also, each 30 minutes you spend without interacting with it in any way makes it lose points.
I very rarely use Poffins, yet I get my buddy excited most of the times I start walking with it. It’s really nice to get some extra candy / mega energy. 😛

There’s something called “Mood Points”
Walking your buddy within 2 KM = 4 Mood Points
Feeding a Berry = 2 Mood Points
Battling with your Buddy = 2 Mood Points
Taking Snapchat = 2 Mood Points
Playing with your buddy = 2 Mood Points
Visiting a new Stop/Gym = 4 Mood points (I’m not sure about this one)
Getting a Gift/Souvenir from you buddy = 4 mood points.
Those 3 tasks that gives you 4 MPs doesn’t restart so no need to do them in every 30 minutes.

All you need to do is:
go to Battle, Train against a faction leader(scroll to bottom of battle screen), leave the battle in a single second no need to even hit and repeat. Get 6 hearts in one minute.
