My name’s Chris King. My small studio, Batterystaple, launched 30XX on the [NA eShop](https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/30xx-switch/) a few days ago on Sept 1. (EU comes Sept 12 – JP comes Sept 28!)
30XX is a co-op-friendly roguelite action platformer heavily inspired by our childhood love of the Mega Man X games. It’s a sequel to our previous game from 5 years ago, 20XX – but with just about twice as much of everything the first game had (lovely vibrant pixel art, twice as many unique level types, totally distinct weapon kits for our two heroes, tons more upgrades, a non-permadeath-Mega Mode option, and a tremendous amount more).
We were slammed with PAX West work all weekend, but now that we’re not, I’d love to answer any questions you have about us, the game, the industry, or whatever else!

I love your games, where would you see batterystaple games in the near future? What is your vision or main goal to achieve? Are we getting more MegaMan games in the future?
What’s the reasoning behind *Experiment 9’s* name?
20XX is one of my favorite games of all time, and I already have 30XX on Steam (and like it quite a bit too!) Are there any Switch-specific features to the game such that I would consider buying it on Switch if I already own it on Steam? Thanks for the great games and I’m looking forward to your future works with high hopes!

Hi Chris! I’m curious about how development for 20XX and 30XX got started. Did this start as a one person project? How many software developers worked on 30XX?

Hi Chris, absolutely loving the game so far! I think I got a couple of questions for you.
For some more fun questions – which of the main 8 stages is your favorite/s? Do you prefer playing as Nina or Ace? What’s the most impressive/cool run or achievement you remember you got in your game that you could share? Fun hearing that kind of thing from the developers themseleves.
For some development questions, what creative idea are you / your team the most proud of? What was the most difficult to implement?
I also have some questions about the future of the game – what kind of content do you plan on adding? Will brand new stages be added? New game modes? New chunks for existing stages? New playable characters? I’m curious how much we can expect here.
Iastly, a small suggestion for a new feature – the one thing I really feel this game is missing is a hybrid run mode that draws chunks both from base game developer chunks and verified community chunks at the same time. Letting you experience the best from both without feeling like you’re missing out. I would really appreciate this option be added. I’ll also comment on the fact that a lot of the bud seems strangely low resolution, so I hope that’s fixed too.

Could you add a mode in the future that lets us play community levels similarly to the standard mode. Would be great to play community levels back to back, and keep the powerups collected in one level for use in the next.
2560×1080 resolution has some broken backgrounds, and while I can understand that widescreen to that scale is a small minority of players, are there any plans to fix them? the smiley face robot guy having visible black bars in the background of his arena is the main example that comes to mind but there’s various other moments of it

I’ve loved the trajectory of gameplay changes made between last year and this year. What’s been your favorite change you’ve made to 30XX since the Abyssal Update?
Two questions.
A. Do you plan to add DLC content to the game, like making Delta playable?
B. Do you intend to bring back datalore pertaining to enemies, bosses, items like 20XX had?
Now that the dust has settled I was wondering if we could expect more weapons for ace and Nina?
Second question would it be possible ace to mix and match his secondary weapons?
Congrats on the launch bought the game twice and and can’t to see what’s next!
I love MegaMan games but don’t play roguelites, is there a game mode that may ease me into it? Beating every level in a Mega Man game without dying once sounds intimidating.
Would any of these be possible for a future update?

I just love this game so much and I would really love to see it grow and grow overtime. Thank you all so much for what’s already in the game. I don’t want it to come off as negative. I’m just excited about this game.
Yo, Sour here. First off, since I don’t say it as often as I should, thanks for making 30XX. It’s surpassed 20XX for me, and the 50XX community has been a huge part of my life for forever now.
Anyways, onto the questions. I have plenty, but I’ll keep it to three.
1. What made you want to do a !>metanarrative!< story?
2. >!Considering the players and mechanics have in game significance in the story (Nina/Ace = Player/Dimesion Hopper, The Maker = level content creators), isn’t it a bit of a narrative contradiction for The Maker to be a potentially destructive force by making too much when they have nearly the opposite effect for the game itself by breathing new life/content into it?!<
3. Is seed consistency going to be a major priority in the next few patches? Daily/Weekly challenges have been somewhat pointless for quite awhile other than as a somewhat broad measuring tool to measure skill between players. It can’t be used for direct competition over the same run, sadly.
Besides Mega Man, what inspirations did you have for 30XX? What were the main things you wanted to change from 20XX during the development of 30XX?
Any future plans for 30XX in general? maybe new stages or extra dlc characters?
I am loving getting to play 30xx with my partner, but she is half-deaf. I was wondering why the audio balancing is so quiet compared to the Switch system itself and other games. Is it intentional or an issue with the porting?
I love the music, but even I couldn’t hear it at all until I doubled the TV’s volume (which is LOUD when I hit the Switch’s home menu). She still can’t hear it very well, even at that level.
Could it be a consideration to patch this in the future?
Perhaps if not by only raising the default volume, simply adding a master volume setting as well that’s at 50% by default (or whatever ratio is appropriate) would be wonderful for anyone hard of hearing!
Besides the Mega Man X series, what games influenced you the most?
I am extremely excited for this. 20XX is so good, I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve played.
Do you have a favorite story about a run you’ve heard of? Whether it’s endless, super hard, etc?

Is there an Xbox version in the works?
Is the multiplayer cross-platform compatible? Would be rad if I could play with a friend on PC from my Switch!
Repro builds feel a bit excessively strong, to the point that the Zookeeper’s Burden prototype aug doesn’t really feel like it has a downside. Are there any plans to adjust repros or the prototype augment?
Also, I don’t know if two posts is an ama faux pas, but any thoughts on adding character palette swaps?
Would be nice as just a feature, but could also help with color blindness. Also just being able to change the outline setting differently per player could help with co-op confusion! 🙂

Hey Chris, first off, I absolutely love the game (and 20XX before it), and am so glad you finally left early access!
What’s your favorite gameplay innovation brought into 30XX over the Megaman X series you’ve drawn inspiration from?
(Mine is being able to do an airdash/double jump/leg part movement after performing a dash jump. Seriously, it feels so good being able to do those actions after a dash jump. Thank you for that.)

What adjustments to your schedule did you have to make when the Switch release was delayed? What did you learn from that roadblock?

Greetings chris! As you may already know I’m very much a fan of both 20XX and 30XX. Even from early access, 30XX was already one of my favorites of all time just from a gameplay standpoint. The amount of improvements made from then to now is staggering. You without a doubt set the standard for early access through your communication and consistency. Now that it’s actually out, I can finally officially say it’s in my top 20.
With that being said, I just have one question: What were your expectations on its reception and did it match up with what it ended up being? Do you yourself think that it’s good enough to stand up and stand out against its ancestors (mega man)? Darn, this ended up being two questions. Well you get the point.
