TIL that during World War II, the United States would have nuked Kyoto instead of Nagasaki if not for the insistence of Henry Stimson. Nintendo HQ would have been destroyed and Nintendo as we know it might not exist today.

Makes you wonder what we did lose

Meanwhile, Nontendo could have existed as of today, but got nuked during WWII.
I thought this was gonna turn into some sort of Mercedes Benz ad.
Would’ve been nice if those nukes didn’t have to get deployed at all… :'(
It says, “They also described the people of Kyoto as “more apt to appreciate the significance of such a weapon as the gadget”. WTF! You mean after you killed them?!
the darkest timeline
Its because he honeymooned there

I think there is a story like this about every prefecture. The other day I heard that Fukuoaka (sp?) was going to be bombed until some guy created a smokescreen.
Who knows what we missed out on when they bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
I heard it was to do with cloud coverage?
Christ, will everyone calm down? I don’t browse /r/Nintendo for political debates
He insisted the city be spared because he and his wife had taken their Honeymoon there and he thought it was a beautiful city.
I thought it was because of the clouds over Kyoto, making the drop less accurate.
We were also about 6 days away from bombing Toyota, as they were making vehicles for the Japanese at that time.

this absolute mess of a thread
well its a good thing they didn’t
Having visited Kyoto, I can’t believe we would have nuked it. There’s a lot of historically significant structures there, like Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, etc.
Damn there are a lot of deleted comments.
I am glad that Japan surrendered early on after the first two atomic bombings, and World War II ended shortly afterwards. I feel bad for those who have suffered on both sides of all nations that had participated, especially those who were victims of the nuclear tests and bombings. Had the war went on, more people would have suffered from [even more atomic bombs](http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/08/14/u-s-planned-to-drop-12-atomic-bombs-on-japan.html)! I wonder how much harder it would have been for future generations to learn and enjoy Japanese culture if it were for more bombs. If Nintendo didn’t exist today, I bet the lives of today’s Nintendo’s fans would have been completely different. I don’t even know what substitute aside from Nintendo that I would have gotten into.
A world of video games without Nintendo would be… a lot more bleak, now that I think about it.
I am visiting Kyoto right now, eating breakfast in an airbnb off of Shijo-dori before heading out for the day. Losing this beautiful city would have been an absolute tragedy.
And this would mean a future without smash bros. and that would be the worst possible future
And effectively PlayStation

Now I want to know what we are missing out on today because it was destroyed in Nagasaki or Hiroshima… War stinks.
Interesting related side note:
SEGA = SErvice GAmes was co-started by a US serviceman.

Alot more things about the world would have been different than just nintendo not existing
this is why we never get the American releases we want
