Nintendo Switch

Playing F-Zero 99 and noticed a phantom outline of one of the race cars still remains on my switch’s screen.

Might be a little hard to see but if you look closely in front of the pictures option, you can see a visible phantom car.

I’ve heard some reports that this might be more of a software issue than a hardware issue. Does it remain after a reboot? Can you take a screenshot and transfer to your phone/computer and see if it still shows up?

Thanks for the warning! I guess I’ll wait until an update happens to play it.

Is your switch an OLED one?

OLED technology does that to screens when the pixel gets too hot is a very bright image is one the screen for too long.

Sadly there is no fix to that if the pixel got burned.

Seems to be a fairly common issue, power the system off for a couple minutes, turn it back on and play a different game for a while, it should be fine

It’s temporary image retention, which can be common on IPS displays. It’ll go away on its own after a while. 2D F-Zero games are known for rapidly flashing graphics to simulate transparency, and I believe this is why they are susceptible to this phenomenon.

In fact, the exact same thing happens in F-Zero games on some of the IPS display replacements for the GBA. It even [happens in F-Zero games when you play on the Analogue Pocket](https://www.reddit.com/r/AnaloguePocket/comments/rp98rj/screen_burn_in_with_fzero_gp_legend/).

It looks like you don’t have the OLED Switch. Permanent OLED burn-in is experienced usually on much longer time scales, but I believe they can also experience temporary retention in some scenarios (not sure about the F-Zero scenario).

3rd time I’ve seen a post like this. I’m definitely staying away from this game.

Is it bad that the first thing I saw was gunbrella (I’ve been playing it) (it’s really good) (play gunbrella)

Happens with my Steam deck while playing Super Mario Kart just a lot more noticeable.

This happens on my monitor after playing for about 30 minutes. It does go away quite quickly

Are you using the OLED switch? LCD screens need a back light to work and when the screen is trying to show black the backlight makes it look grey, OLEDs light themselves up so each LED will be off so blacks are deep black. OLEDs used to have horrible burn-in because of this and Nintendo must be using an OLED display that isn’t as capable of preventing burn-in as modern phones.

  11. You got one of the rare plasma switches?!?! Lucky!!!

Funny, I get this issue on my Samsung TV (QLED) but not on my OLED Switch. I’d usually expect the opposite. Goes away after a few minutes of playing or watching something else though.

Did you leave your switch in the sub with the game open for an extended period of time?

  14. XarlesEHeat

I’ve seen it reported as a bug a few times now, it is a game fault

  15. IceBlueLugia

Yeah this happens on 3DS as well if you turn off ghosting. Totally normal

  17. alienmack93

  19. blood_omen

You haven’t been on this sub lately have you

  20. Something very similar happened to me after playing Dr Mario when NSO first came out in 2018. I was scared at first, but restarting the system fixed it for me. Should work in this case.

  21. AveragePichu

It’s the Ghost of Christmas Past, don’t worry about it

    1. Your screen has been burnt

    2. There are some YouTube videos that may work for this cases, you just need to search “screen burn fix”. Those videos are a bit long, thay may work because they’re *very* flashy

  29. HammyDownConsole

That happened to my switch after playing Metroid on GBA. It eventually went away so have hope!

  30. Holy shit they still haven’t fixed it, way to go Nintendo

  31. DanTheMan827

The CRT filter Nintendo uses causes temporary image retention. It happened to me on my TV when I played a snes game with the CRT filter on.

  32. Oglaxhustla562

Hmm maybe try taking a screenshot on the switch maybe we could see it a little better. It’s a little hard to see
