I was playing handheld mode with this console since I first purchased my 1.0 launch model Switch from the summer of 2017. But then my Joycons started drifting in 2020 and I never bothered to get them fixed. These days whenever I played undocked, I bring my pro controller because I just find that controller more comfortable for most of the games I play.
But I also plan to get the [Mario Red Switch OLED](https://youtu.be/yyjQUH7NvWI?feature=shared) real soon, and I can imagine the jump between my 1.0 model with the crappier battery life and this newest model with better battery *and* more internal storage, that I’m gonna be spending a lot more time playing handheld mode.
I was basically molded by handheld gaming systems, given my first video game console was a DS Lite. My current 3DS model is the New 2DS XL and I still play that pretty regularly. I know a lot of folks prefer to keep their Switches docked and leave handheld play to the kiddies, but I don’t consider handheld mode a gimmick like how the stereoscopic 3D was for the 3DS. I definitely see myself getting back into handheld play when I get my OLED. Maybe I’ll even start using the Joycons again who knows.
