Collection of every official modern Mario image done in the “classic” art style

Almost 3 months ago now, I began compiling every official modern Mario image done in the “classic” art style—specifically, those done by or in the style of [Shigehisa Nakaue](https://www.mariowiki.com/Shigehisa_Nakaue)’s work. Though it took far longer than anticipated—both due to just being busy with other things and because there was far more art than I had thought—I have at last finished it and uploaded it to Google Drive for your viewing pleasure.

These images come from a myriad of sources, including actual Mario games themselves, promotional material associated with a game, Nintendo’s website, as well as some others. They are all sorted into folders titled for their overall source (e.g., the Super Mario 3D World folder contains both images from the game itself and images from its soundtrack). I was hoping to find an image host that would let me keep all of these folders connected while also allowing me to tag each image so you could sort them all by characters, but alas. Hopefully the image titles won’t be too difficult to navigate.

That being said, [here is the link to the album](https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/11tejmzK-hLtn60fulqV7-sLoFKZ9eOIN?usp=sharing)! If you happen to find any images I somehow missed, please send them my way and I’ll see that they’re added.

Enjoy!

Edit: The [Miscellaneous folder](https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1PN6sXklGY9DDv3IyWuU7cPK5pgvWlvhN) is by far the biggest, so be sure to take a look at that!

Edit 2: Just updated the Miscellaneous folder with some new images, and there is [now a folder for Mario Party: Star Rush](https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Tm-BWogVgTnqOHEJ0Rgid05QK5Qb3sjN). Big thanks to /u/PinkTennisPrincess for these!

I always loved that style of art for Mario, Great Job!

If Nintendo released new 2D games using this art style, I would buy it day one.

It is a crime there’s not more Super Mario artbooks available. I remember tracing over these kind of illustrations of Mario from game boxes and Nintendo Power magazine as a kid, hoping to learn the style. I never had a name to put to the illustration – thanks OP for teaching me of Yoichi Kotabe and Shigehisa Nakaue 😀

DUDE, what the hell, this guy did the recent 2D illustrations for Mario? Wow, he’s excellent, I almost couldn’t tell a difference. I did notice there was a bit more of a stretchiness to some of the characters and I always figured it was Kotabe’s style evolving, but I was surprised that an old school figure like him could adapt to computer illustration. That’s really pretty crazy

these are SO good. I love the old school SNES hand-drawn style. Nothing is more evocative of my childhood

So it’s just new art that uses an old style? While cool, I’d rather see a collection of the official old art. These doesn’t do much for me and i can’t seem to find old art from the NES/SNES era.
