Beyond the Hype. I created this series as there is a lot of click bait and false impressions of pokemon and I want to give you a real in depth analysis of whether a pokemon is worth spending dust and candies on.

  1. I started playing in 2016 and then restarted in 2019. It wasn’t until remote raids that I actually got legendary. In my area of Waterdown/Hamilton most players have multiples and hundos of the bosses. So raid hours are a ghost town with tumbleweed. No one shows up, no one wants to do it. Now I only ever do raids that I can do by forming a party with my kid’s account and duo or trio it. The saving grace was GBL which became the only aspect of the game I actually liked. I catch pokemon only for GBL, IVs, candy and the dust. I played GBL since the pre-season when you had to walk to walk to get sets. This season I haven’t played a full set in 2 months. I’ve lost almost all of my interest in GBL. The lag, the glitches, new bugs and no one from Niantic seems to be doing anything about it. ML is not even doable for me because the only mon I have close to Lvl 50 is Dialga and the others are lacking XLs. The only thing I concentrate on now is hitting Level 50. If I was Level 50 I’d probably be done with it. It’s sad because there is so much Niantic could do for the game. In order to stretch it out they are driving players away. 🤷🏾‍♂️

  2. I started in 2017, played until 2020. Totally stopped a month before Covid, picked it back up in 2022, and have been playing since. I basically have been trying to complete the shiny dex as much as possible. I don't do the community thing anymore. I find the shiny odds for raided pokemon to be kinda insane price wise. You can do over 100 raids and still not get a shiny. That's the worst part to me and nerfed raid passes hurt. I'm almost done for real. It's not worth it to do all the driving and money spending for a digital pokemon that means nothing in real life.

  3. Went free to play after the remote raid nerf, I find myself only doing a set or two of GBL.

I took a 4 month break from Counter Strike GO/Counterstrike 2 and decided to start playing, so when I want to play a game I'd rather play CS.

  4. Pokémon go and Taco Bell are like the same company. Always recycling product and ingredients. I really only grind pogo on Sundays or Saturdays if there is an event. Hard to play pogo after work on the weekdays. Barely do the raid hours. If the spotlight hour is good I’ll do it. The live events over the summer has solidified my interest

  5. 1.I stopped hard raiding when they increased prices,do only a free pass
    2. I am down to some event if it suits my lifestyle
    3. Play GBL when I am convenient to do.

  6. I’m actually one of the few new players and I joined just two months ago. Your content has been helping me a lot as I always use YouTube to find what teams to build for GBL, which is my main focus in the game. Other than that I don’t do routes, I don’t do raids since it is a nuisance to go to the right place at the right time. I always catch the same useless Pokémon’s the few times I’m going out too, unless there is an event. I can feel that the hype for the wild scavenger’s hunt has died down.

  7. I started in 2016, but my stats are half of yours. Maybe being a hardcore player burnt you out?

I’m an OG Pokemon fan from the blue/red days. Now my main activities are battling and raiding secondary. I’ve gotten my wife into the game now and we use it as motivation to walk and exercise everyday with the zygarde routes.

  8. Raiding is by far the biggest flaw of this game. I can rarely raid above level 3 raids because I rarely encounter anyone else raiding outside of very specific raid days.

  9. I played for about year when it first came out and I stopped, like uninstalled the game app, until June last year. A lot has changed since 2017. I only had kanto dex completed (except for mew and mewtwo of course) and I realized I missed out on so much. I was so excited to come back to the game. I found YouTube channels like this one, started to go through videos from oldest to most recent. And no doubt, I see a continuing drop of enthusiasm of content creators on their videos which was sad to see, and I’m sad to see this video from one of my favourite channels.

Thanks Dan, for bringing me up to speed in GBL, its meta, and analysis. I’m still at Ace rank but still enjoying it. It might be because I only experienced one meta change, but I still find “chasing” the meta still fun and rewarding. I have 6 years of PoGo stuff I missed and trying to catch up. I suppose once I “feel” that I’ve caught up and not really going to miss anything, I might join you then (9-5 job, two young kids, cold Canadian city).

Hope you still enjoy the game casually and enjoy finding new, fun things to fill up your regained free time!

  10. Scariest title ever 😥 I'm late to the game. I believe in June or July I'll hit 2 years of playing. I wasn't really into PVP at first but once they took away the free weekly remote raid pass & jacked up the prices for em; it pushed me to it. I found out about PVP IVs really late too but once I started watching videos like yours, I was hooked. The XL candy & drop in accessibility to remote raid kills me. I've actually gotten to raid with you a few times! Always sucks when I don't have an available pass but I still appreciate those invites! Hopefully Niantic will reevaluate things at some point.

  11. Dan, huge fan, you’ve always had such a fun perspective and dynamic on your channel about gbl content, so I’d hate to see you leave, but here are some of my thoughts. As someone who originally played for a month in 2016, hit around level 12, and took a hiatus until 2020, there will never be anything close to that original feeling of playing. Not having good pokemon, finding new ones, completing the pokedex are such core memories you can’t bring back over a longer period of time. The state of any game declines for long term players if the game isn’t constantly improving. Unfortunately for pokemon, there are only 9 generations, and Pokemon Go has nearly brought forth all 9 generations within 7-8 years. While not necessarily bad, it just shows that content will continue to slow. Without improvements to leveling and candy access there will really be no big incentive for the more intense players to play events when they have the resources already. Enjoy those few events that you do. Have a great goomy com day. Do battles here and there. I do my best to hit legend every season, then I only play a few battles after I hit it. It gives me time to spend with family, while still being active in the game. For me, getting those xl candies stocked up for leveling up future pokemon is such a good milestone to keep me going. I’m planning on building six really good shadow salamences, among many others. That’s a whopping 2k plus candy to invest. Catching those bagons and trading them will take awhile. It won’t happen overnight by any means, but a com day would help me build those resources faster. These small things help keep me invested in a game that I genuinely love, but I understand as a level 50 player, there are dwindling events and things for me to improve in.

  12. This was a bad event? I think there’s a big difference between hardcore players and casual players here. I cant or don’t bother doing every community day. So all of these great dragon Pokémon and the absurd lucky Pokémon and lucky friend chances made this a great event for me and my gf. We got more than 10 luckies per day, 100 luckies in one week between the two of us.

  13. I'm always active in PG, but my participation in GBL, cycles. GBL is so much more time intensive, and I often take time off from it when I get discouraged, as I can rarely get above the 2200s. As such my viewing of GBL teachers, like yourself, waxes and wanes. I would miss your videos, as I feel you offer a different approach and instruction, and I'm often inspired and encouraged by your content.

  14. I for one really appreciated this latest dragon event. I played for like six months to a year when the game released as a rural player, only got to about level 34. So I missed out on all these "community days" so from my point of view this latest dragon event was MONEY for me. I need all the magikarp / dragonite / gibble / bagon / Deino candy I can get my hands on!

  15. Level 49, probably will make 50 in the next month or two. I started in 2016, played for a month, got to level 11, and stopped after a Pokemon injury at Glacier National Park. Then my kids (old kids by then) convinced me to restart in Dec 2021. I'm certainly catching, raiding, gifting, and PVP'ing more now than ever–because I really haven't been playing that long. I try to hit level 20 in PVP each season, mainly for the stardust rewards. And your videos have helped me get there a number of times. Will I ever make the upper ranks in PVP? Probably not, because Niantic screwed anybody who wasn't already level 50 when they decided to nerf remote raids. Certainly not if content creators like you get so demotivated that they quit. Hopefully, Niantic can figure out how to keep you guys around. Do the Youtube analytics tell you how many Singaporean grandmothers are followers?

  16. Very similar: I skip or do the events "on the side". Don't grind eggs or raids or such.
I used to love GBL – but it's soooo repetitive. They are somehow able to keep the card and video game exciting and always new again. But Pokemon Go GBL is just not that.

  17. I saw the video am I had sit down on it! Am this is what I have to say…I am a ROG/Exploration Gamer since the days of the Super Nintendo ( Zelda, Final Fantay, Breath Of Fire, Metroid, Tomb Rider) the one thing I love about that is that thee is more to do than just one thing…
As for Pokemon Go goes I had play the game none stop since 2016… a lot has change since those days… things that the player base have ask am yet they still asking for more! The game has a good amount of things to kept one active from Badges to making Gyms Gold! If one as a player concentrates on one aspect of the game bc that’s the only thing they like … they will hit a brick WALL! So one has 2 choices climb up or rest your back on that wall am think about what to do next… hands-up one can only go left/right/up! What ever you decide to do Dan it will be okay bc many content creators had end up where you are am they don’t play anymore! Take a break or stop completely it is at to you! I’ll be playing until Niantic cancels this thing… hey I just finish rebuilding my Ultra League Line Up so I’ll be playing more GBL in Season 18! Lol
You Have Come A Long Way From Self Proclaimed Best Player In The World to Now! Good Kid! Keep It Up!

  18. I've been playing since a month after release, Legend double-digit times in GBL, but I quit playing PVP a few seasons ago because I just can't keep up with the try-harders in my favorite league (Master League). Like you, I have two kids and a 9-5 job, and the fact that it takes over 70 raids to accumulate enough XL Candy (assuming 4 XL per raid) to power up a Legendary is crazy. Even when I do feel like paying to do it, you almost have to raid every Legendary when you have the chance, because it will likely disappear and not return for months or years.

And then Niantic introduces something like Zygarde that is insanely broken.

  19. Ya dude at least a year ago I have up on it cuz they just refuse to fix/improve the pvp at all which is genuinely the only part of the game I liked but they don't wanna commit resources to reveal its potential and I don't see that changing

  20. Ya honestly it's like they keep trying to kill the game and I'm super done with it they legit just trying to milk it before they run out of content and it's so annoying.omg the getting excited about the showcase really just drives my point home like wtf ya hold onto all this pointless stuff just in case it's a showcase not to mention it should have been in the game soooooo long ago I just have no idea what is going on in there offices honest guess is nothing

  21. Started a month after the game was released. I still find pvp fun despite all of the problems. I complain about all the problems and glitches and get rewarded with premium passes. It’s more efficient than putting Pokémon in gyms for raid passes. I’ve hit legend every season. On go battle day I was doing my battles in the 3300’s in ML. Which is flooded with Zygardes and teams of mythicals. I have lots of master league Pokémon but not that caliber. I play smarter not harder. I’ve been asked by community members how I can keep grinding GBL. I usually have Pokémon I power up in preparation for the season to use or have ridiculous challenges like this season seeing how high I can get doing auto rekt for all battles. I made it to 2500 elo before tapping out. I’ve coached many people to legend and have made a good deal of money off of it.

GBL needs a complete overhaul. They’ve had the same bugs since season 4. I’d be fired from a job if I couldn’t fix a problem after 6 years. Even doing something as simple as draft play would make GBL great again. Nobody likes being rps’ed because of the meta, algorithm or too many good mons, which is why I like the limited formats like ml or hissui cup where there’s only 10-15 Pokémon I have to prepare for. Open great league is a nightmare for being hard countered.

Your stuff on showcases, routes, raids, eggs were spot on I wish they’d listen.

You make great videos Dan. Take a break. Don’t over work yourself.

  22. The game has gone flat… definitely needs a boost! Nowhere did you speak of gym control, battling and the only badge that says leader.. PvP as well has hurt game has been boring as well with no creativity! Go out and battle gyms. Maybe someday ya will get that area up to One Million hours…

  23. I started playing this game in 2018 as well but only got back into it seriously last GBL season. I was surprised how much I enjoyed the intricacies of GBL and it gave me a reason to grind the game. That being said, I'm a grad student who has classes, research, homework, and a girlfriend whom I live with and spend most of my free time with. I play when I can, and fortunately when I'm on campus for classes, there are plenty of stops and gyms. I've noticed a significant decline in raids, its impossible to coordinate because of how quick they overturn and it just doesn't align with class schedules for the tens of people that are playing on campus. I'm also mostly free to play because I currently don't have a consistent income, so master league is pretty much out of the picture and Ultra League is a grind. I started so late, so I feel like I'm constantly low on resources trying to power up meta pokemon that everyone has. I enjoy the game and will continue to play as much as I currently do, but that's only in moderation. I'm looking forward to the global sinnoh tour event and the XL candy bonuses starting tomorrow. I love your channel and I like your personal story. It's something I look up to.

  24. I'll give a counter take. Played the first month the game was out and quit until this Oct. This dragon event and the repeat raids have been fantastic for me. The raids def have issues (local is impossible unless you're a spoofer or in a certain area and remote cost). I've been super glad to be able to build up some of these meta pokes. The Evo cup sucks tho imo.

Your content was/is super helpful to learn quick, and I'll be sad if you choose to leave, although understandable.

  25. OG player here, started in 2016 but really in the winter of 2017 when Korea was allowed to gain the map to play.

I enjoy the PvE aspect of the game and mostly a collector first and foremost. I like hundos, nundos, shinies, Luckies, getting a living Dex of the highest possible IVs, making trades for regionals and so on. I like battling gyms and gym control if time allows it. I like playing the game as intended from the beginning. I used to raid a lot and join weekend groups or town groups for raids and trades. I was a proud Level 40 player and one of the fastest one to reach it in my little town of hardcore players at the time.

Then PvP started. I learned and learned rather late. I hit Legend for the first time this season for the "dumb" Ingo pose you don't seem to like, but I went for it and reached this top rank. I like the pose a lot more than Leon's and Geeta's personally, but to each his own, right? PvP is fun to play but so frustrating to deal with. The meta has always favored specific set of Pokemon and the move updates were always too extreme. This season, despite my efforts to climb and actually hit Legend even faster than you, Dan, was so awful but I played to counter Poliwrath and Tentacruel specifically. Scald is so broken. Poliwrath did not need THREE buffs all at once. Skarmory got its deserved buff but paired with Whiscash, I just avoided the Open Great League if I could because of how shifty and RPS the battles became. I preferred the prevalence of Medicham and Lickitung because they could be hard countered. You know why else? Because now everyone is fishing for the 30% and 50% debuffs. I never get them but my opponent not only get the stupid 50% debuffs on the Scalds but also every other Night Slash boosts for who knows what reason. At least with Medi and Licki and Azu, it's a sure thing. Sure, the meta still sucks and revolve around them, but you count to 5, 6 or 7, and you just play the matchups. Now it was all about who gets the debuff first — this is why I stopped caring for VGC in the mainline games. Someone who gets that 10% chance to burn or if I miss on an 90% accurate move killed any and all momentum. So I said eff it, I'm going to outbulk and played the anti-Poliwrath, the anti-Giratina, the anti-Tentacruel team that only loses to 1 Pokemon (Registeel) or to bad matchups in the back, and went all in with the OUL.

I credit content creators like yourself for teaching the game, and promoting not simply trying out teams that work for you. Every other YTers say, "Annihilape is broken" or "Gotta try this team out" only for them to not work for me. I played my team and one-tricked it to Legend. It lost to 90% of Registeel matchups but I won most of the battles without an XL Registeel lurking.

Niantic is all over the place. The monetization is whatever, I'll pick and choose when to financially invest. The events are whatever, I stopped complaining. Trying to catch ANY Fairy types in the wild is stupidly annoying for their catch rates. Community Days were whatever since I still have the collectivist in me to get the shiny, the hundo and maybe even a lucky via trade. The meta is unbalanced still because of how overpowered certain moves or Pokemon are. I still think Counter as a move is broken, but you can't nerf every Counter user. I also think Dragon Breath is insanely overpowered, which makes Shadow Dragonair unbearable at times to deal with. I used to think Incinerate is too OP and I think could use a tiny nerf (25 –> 22 for damage?). And I think all the starters' CD moves should be the same at 50 energy and same amount of power between 90-100. Blastoise was the reason why Hydro Cannon is as strong as it is, because it had the lowest attack stat of the three Kanto starters.

I know I'm just rambling and people will quickly come to disagree, which is fine by me. Just sharing them with you as you've been pretty honest with the state of the game. I probably won't make another push for Legend in the GBL because I proved to myself that I did it once, and could always do it again with conscientious effort. The Sinnoh Tour does intrigue me but not because I want a Shiny Pachirisu or Palkia Origin, but because I want to be able to play with friends or people who like to just casually play the game. People here in Korea come out for this and it's a joy to experience.

I just want to say I appreciate the rants, the learning tips and your general battle style. Like, you take these battles and team-building seriously, but at the same time, you're a dad and I'm around your age, so I understand that life will get in the way and PoGO is NOT a forever game. I've taken a long break before and won't be afraid to take one again if needed.

  26. As a new player that started 3 months ago this dragon event was a literal godsend because i was finally able to get gyarados, gatchomp, salamence and hydreigon

  27. as a player who started back in 2016 and took long breaks til recently I have to say enjoying the recent events, and of course I undersatnd for older players these repeat mons and stuff are boring. I do hope they bring out newer stuff for both older and young trainers to enjoy. For me, it's actually to be more active while with an added fun with pkgo, I guess every trainer's different.

  28. I could see this coming, mostly because I’m feeling exactly the same. The only thing that makes me open the app is my trying to hit legend for the second time ever. But even then I find myself not completing all 5 sets each day. I’m 100% positive that, if I manage to hit legend, I’ll instantly stop playing and will wait for something new to hit the game.

For me personally, playing a game that gives me the feeling that the people behind it care is very important. I play overwatch 2 on my pc, and although the devs made horrible decisions time and time again, they do listen to feedback and implement changes frequently. Niantic forces a way on its players how THEY want you to play and this drives me away from the game.

  29. I've uninstalled this game recently. The moment I saw I needed to buy a ticket to fight Giovanna during the rocket event I knew it was time to leave.

  30. I use to love this game until I realized it was pay to win . Especially when I moved to Florida with nothing near me

  31. I have barely been playing 10 minutes a day lately since the game can't even be played in the most basic degree without crashing anymore

  32. Same same. I started with this game exactly three years ago. I had no previous experience with any Pokemon game at all, not even the TV show. So there was a lot to learn. I met a bunch of people, some of them even became friends. But right now I have the same feelings about this game that you shared.

  33. There really should be another way to grind xl candy for older legendaries besides raids. Since there are not as many out doing raids for old mons it seems like even with the 3 bonus xl candy, it is harder to max these now than before. Although this depends a lot on where you live.

  34. I've played 1,5 years, and even I think the pokemon in the spawns are old and useless. I also really hope the meta changes next season, it sucks. I like pvp and do like 3 to 5 sets a day. Otherwise I don't play much, no raiding, no grinding and as a dad, usually can't play comm days either.
