Not only was Gold a worthy opponent after beating Blue, he also beat Red. That is one hell of a feat.

Honestly that's a really cool theory that Oak pushed Gold, so he would be a better challenge for Red.
The only problem i have with it is Oak telling Red going to Mt. Silver, as he doesn't get anything out of it. I think it's better for Red going to Silver on his own volition to train, and Oak does Red a favor unprompted by pushing Gold.
