Nowadays, it’s become a sort of tactic used for its own amusement.
An ancient civilization domesticated these pokemon millions of years ago, and they are the last surviving pokemon from that time. Everything else in Nalfia has come from the last 1 million years. Ancient families would have a pet Saratah to warm the house, they were brought to Nalfia on an expedition to meet the king, and legend has it they are still the same after all these years.
Young Thoctol are buried in the sand while enemies are around. It’s main predators are Oranguru and Golisopod, and both can fill their mouths with a whole clutch of Thoctol. Their squishy gelatinous bodies are filled with the same nutrients found in Azurill tails. These species were at one point considered a Convergent evolution, but its body chemistry and makeup are closer to a Skrelp.
