11:20 – Vs. Tornadus: EX-R Tierno / EX New Year Dawn
I’m not gonna pretend and say that I liked the Kalos rivals from Day 1 – I did think they were a big step back from how amazing the Unova rivals were. But over time I did begin to appreciate them for what they brought to the table (or at least attempted to). Tierno is one of very few rivals (and one of very few trainers in general) who explicitly doesn’t have the same goal of being the strongest in mind. If they built on his dream of creating a dance team more and added more personality, I think he’d be more well-received.
He doesn’t have to prove himself too hardly in PoMa though. Tierno’s a pretty fun support, and while being a spotlight means he doesn’t reach the same ridiculous levels of utility as NC Blue or NC Rosa, he still has quite a lot of fun tools in his kit.
I tried to highlight as much of these tools as I can with this video. Here’s how each battle went and the sync grids used:
Vs. Will: EX-R Tierno / EX Looker / James – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=024100011000&s0=1&l0=140&r0=5&p0=0&a0=21010101&t0=4444&g0=AAECAwQF&v1=018000034200&s1=3&l1=150&r1=6&p1=0&a1=18046602&t1=4444&x1=true&g1=AAECAwQFBgcRFBUYGhscHyIlJigrLQ&v2=021700045300&s2=5&l2=140&r2=6&p2=0&a2=13010602&t2=444&g2=AAECAwQFERQVFhcZGigrLS4v
Tierno’s TM is, quite frankly, ridiculous for a spotlight support haha. It has the same buffing efficiency as Hilbert’s TM, and with grid tiles it can buff even more stats if needed. That said, he does need TM MPR if you want to max out the team’s Attack and crit, and resetting for that 30% proc can get frustrating.
His fast buffs coupled with defense debuffs from Leer lets him anchor fast-paced clears like this. James applies AOE poison to complete Looker’s multipliers.
Vs. Koga: EX-R Tierno / Tech Nidoran F / Tech Ekans – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=003140&s0=1&l0=150&r0=5&p0=0&a0=21010101&t0=44&n0=3&f0=20&v1=018000034200&s1=3&l1=150&r1=6&p1=0&a1=24010701&t1=4444&x1=true&g1=AAECAwQFBggLDhobHiEkJigqLQ&v2=002440&s2=1&l2=150&r2=4&p2=0&a2=21010101&t2=44&n2=3&f2=0
From a turn 4 clear to a turn 40+ clear lol. Tierno heals himself every time he uses Night Slash, has regen on his TM, has Team Fist Bump to heal the whole team when he’s hit (for 30% of the time), and tops all of that off with Synchro Healing. All these, coupled with Attack Trap on Night Slash, makes him a pretty fun tank to use in stall teams. Tech Ekans provided the toxic poison while Tech Nidoran provided debuffs.
Dunno where else to mention this, but innate Vigilance lets him be quite flexible with his lucky skill. I used Antitoxin here since Koga has Hostile Environment.
Vs. Lucian: EX-R Tierno / EX Masked Royal / Nanu – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=005600005301&s0=5&l0=140&r0=4&p0=0&a0=13010602&t0=4444&g0=AAECAwQFBgcKCwwNFRYcHiMlJyks&v1=018000034200&s1=3&l1=150&r1=6&p1=0&a1=24010701&t1=4444&x1=true&g1=AAECAwQFBhEUFRgaGx4hJCUoKi0&v2=011700072700&s2=5&l2=140&r2=6&p2=0&a2=13010602&t2=44444&g2=AAECAwQFExQVFxgjJSkqKywuLw
Tierno’s sustain and debuffs make him a pretty good anchor for high score events. Since the Psychic HS was still running when I made this video, I made a what-if team for a potential Dark HS down the line, and it’s nice to see that Tierno can still tank comfortably even at 500 strength. Lucian’s stage is weak against Attack debuffs, which is why I brought Masked Royal here, with Nanu completing the team with his flinches.
Vs. Tornadus: EX-R Tierno / EX New Year Dawn – https://ng-pomatools.web.app/team?v0=011603074103&s0=5&l0=150&r0=6&p0=0&a0=18097902&t0=44444&g0=AAECAwQFFRgZIyUpLC0uLw&v1=018000034200&s1=3&l1=150&r1=6&p1=0&a1=17010701&t1=4444&x1=true&g1=AAECAwQFBgcKDRobHiEkJigqLQ&v2=0
Tierno has a pretty good matchup against a lot of legendary arenas. As of the time I’m writing this, he can solo nine of them, and I think he has one more in him at maximum investment (5/5 and grid overcap). Thanks to his sustain he can pull off some long-haul clears like this one.
(Tierno getting an Oricorio alt is just as important to me as Roxie getting a Toxtricity one. I’m not even kidding.)

Which Oricorio form would you prefer for a Tierno alt?
I wasn’t expecting Tierno to be so versatile, to be quite honest. His kit seemed really average on the surface, but it’s hiding some good basic utility that often gets ignored by modern units for more wild and drastic effects
