The “gift with purchase” from Target for Princess Peach Showtime was NOT as advertised

I was so excited after I saw the ad from Target showing what free gift they were offering with purchase of Princess Peach showtime. It looked like great quality, nice plastic tumbler, with the lid flush with the cup. Looked like the cups where the print is protected on the inside between the thing plastic bottom and top layer – possibly dishwasher safe, so no worries about the print. Looked like the cups they sell at Starbucks. It was in store only, limited quantities. I went early and they had 4 left when I got there. I get to my car to look at it and it’s totally not what was advertised. I’m pretty disappointed.
The cup feels poor quality, thin plastic. If you’ve ever been to Applebees or Chilis as a kid, they give out free take home children’s cups and those are better quality. The lid is a sharp plastic that sticks out from the cup and doesn’t feel like it’s on very tight either. The straw is rubber or something similar, which I guess you could say is better quality than the plastic one in the pic. It’s the one okay thing about the cup. The print on the cup looks like a cropped version and will 100% wash off after a few hand washes. Could probably even scratch it off on accident. I’m bummed and will probably give the cup to a kid in my family. They did Peach fans dirty with that false advertising.

Looks like a cheap sippy cup in the ad to me. Like something you’d get at a movie theater and throw away. You know how expensive good tumblers are? They’re not going to include something high quality like that for free.

  2. Dude if I was offered a free cup based on a game I was already planning on purchasing, and then went to the store and got a free cup, absolutely 100% free, I would be jumping for joy and not going online to complain about something that is FREE.

  3. BoxofStickz

Who gets something for free then complains?! My word.

Looks spot on from the ad really. Were you really expecting a $20 tumbler for buying a $60 game?

Seems like this is on you. I think the cup looks pretty good for a free cup.

  5. DeusExCaliber

I wouldn’t really get my hopes up about physical pre order bonuses tbh

It’s slightly different than the ad, but I’m still happy with it. This was the only purchase bonus I thought that I’d use, so it’s great that I got a free cup. The rubber straw is a little weird, but it’s free and the cup and straw topper are cute. I was pleasantly surprised by the nice artwork around the cup

No way they were going to give some high quality tumbler. Aren’t the Starbucks ones like $20?

  8. REMUv777

Yeah I can understand the misrepresentation. The one in the pic looks more sturdy than the one you get. The one you got was a lesser quality than depicted.

If you don’t like it, I’m sure there are some young kids (the game’s target audience) you could give it to who would not care about the quality of it.

TBH, my 5 year old son who loves Princess Peach would go crazy for that cup.

I’ll be honest OP, this is just an open and shut case of you having your expectations set way to high for something like this.

From what I and it looks like many others have seen, the first picture and the one you took are about what was to be expected.

You make it sound like you’re sad they weren’t handing out Stanley Cups or something which makes no sense

    >They did Peach fans dirty with that false advertising

    Hahahaha no they didn’t.

honestly i think the cup is really cute ❤️ i have a similar style of cup with different design on it and it’s held up pretty well to handwashing so far. i’m very gentle with it since it’s special and also delicate looking. had it for at least two years now with no problems!

They used a computer rendered image in the ad likely because they had a tight production timeline and didn’t have time or resources to get a sample shipped, photographed, and worked into their marketing before rollout. This is very common, and the render isn’t really meant to be a perfect representation of materials and quality; the retailer would usually provide some of those details in a text description to clarify. In my opinion the image isn’t far off from the final product, but that’s just my perspective as someone who’s seen some of the back end of similar product design/production/marketing cycles.

  14. melomelomelo-

Yeah they should have used an actual picture of the cup

  15. ChickenDenders

Bro just buy a sticker and put it on a regular tumbler

This is the funniest post I’ve seen in a while

All you did was now get me to buy the game from Target. My daughter was already looking forward to the game but she would love having that cup as well.

Edit: My local Target didn’t get the cups shipped to them at all. Oh well at least they had the game.

So, it’s “false advertising” because **you** *assumed* it was going to be some sort of top-of-the-line, high quality item based on a single picture in a *target ad*?

You received a cup exactly as shown in the picture, the rest of your disappointment was from your own misguided beliefs, assumptions and conjecture. And honestly, that cup is way better quality than I would have guessed you were going to get.

On top of all of that, *when* has there ever been a preorder bonus from a store or the like (not a collectors edition upgrade) that wasn’t just straight cheap-ass modern-loot-crate-esque trash? “Free Gift With Purchase” immediately screams to me that it’ll be a garbage item because a big company isn’t going to want to invest a ton of high quality material to make some amazing thing they’re giving away for free. They’re going to look for the cheapest avenue to continue to make money from the original product PLUS the free item.

Sorry to say, you played yourself on this one.

  19. MovieGuyMike

Gifts with purchase are generally low quality merch used to sell the base product while minimizing added cost to the overall cost of said product.

  20. Clares_Claymore

Looks exactly like the picture. And what kinda quality did you expect 🤦‍♂️

  21. DOAisBetter

It looked like a cheap sippie cup or crappy 3D render. You got an actual real cup that was not for babies. I think you did all right but you do you.

  22. Corporate needs you to find the differences between this picture and this picture…

  23. Ph33rDensetsu

If you’ll look closely at the illustration, the artwork goes all the way to the edges. If it were double walled, it would stop at the inner edge. Those parts you think are the double walls are actually just shading to illustrate a 3D object in a 2D space.

OP, your expectations were too high, because the art looks nearly identical to the product received.

If the lid truly doesn’t sit all the way flush, that’s definitely a point for disappointment.

  24. Shearer292

Wtf are you moaning about? It was a free gift and looks like a cup with a straw to me which is what they advertised….

  25. Icey3900

Sorry but it looks exactly how it was advertised lmao

  26. Mastxadow

It’s a cheap cup as a free gift on a kid’s game, what were you expecting?
    An Stanley cup?

  27. Looking at your photos, I can tell that you haven’t fully snapped the lid on.

While it’s not as shown in the promotional image (which appears to be a mere stand-in representation), it’s much better than I expected it to be:
    – cup is taller than it appears in the promotional image. It’s taller than the game case and a bit like a medium drink from McDonald’s or Burger King.
    – lid snaps on pretty tightly (this surprised me)
    – more than one image is on the cup

Yes, the print is likely to wear off within a few washes and the cup seems likely to snap if it underwent a bit of crushing pressure.
I had wondered if the cup had an inner compartment holding the picture but the promotional image did not really give the impression that it did.

I’d hoped it was a bit more sturdy/durable but I’m still satisfied as it justifies paying full price for the game imo (I prefer to wait for discount opportunities but really want to play this).

Also: Either we went to the same Target or locations have very few of this bonus item because the employee at the first location I visited told me they saw the same quantity you mentioned (and had sold out).

  28. PanicLogically

I’ve never seen a really high end Freebie with a release . Just saying.

  29. Autisticrocheter

    It looks…. Exactly as advertized

  30. CrunkingtonSr

Looks higher quality than I imagined, honestly

  31. Past_Read_3559

Went to my target this morning and the guy looked at me like I had 2 heads…he had no clue what the cupnwas or where it was…asked his co workers…also no clue….I even showed them.the target add for it and they were.like…sorry can’t help you maybe we never.got them??
    I was pretty bummed 🙁

  32. fulltimefrenzy

Looks pretty much spot on. Seen much more egregious examples tbh.

  33. Pelthail

That ad picture is 100% the digital rendering of the cup and not an actual product photo.

  34. Kind of funny everybody is okay with this, but back when Fall Out 76 came out with a nylon bag instead of a canvas bag as advertised, everyone lost their minds. The times sure has changed…
