The response sounds fine to me. While I doubt things would be reverted, I can see a world with one of two solutions:
1: Allow a toggle for the OG avatar or the new one
2: They invest more into the new avatar creator and actually improve the models from player feedback.

Frankly the characters look (as someone with ADHD and Asperger’s) like they are what a stereotypical mentally handicapped person would look like. The only thing I am getting from this change is that Niantic believes being inclusive means you have to be uglier or mentally impaired.

I might just stop playing pokemon go at this point. I got into it again cause of my daily commutes to uni but if this is what's going on and the fact they are working with that company, well then… I'm out. I got more games to spend my time on

How does the Pokemon Company get involved with other companies ran by idiots. They aren't even making any more money off of these changes.
This is my take: if the goal was to make in-game avatars more diverse, then they should have been adding new body types instead of removing the old ones and replacing them with these new ones. There is a percentage of the user-base whose body-type was better represented by the previous avatars, and that was taken away from them. How is that supposed to make the game more inclusive? That's what these companies fail to understand. You don't make your game less inclusive to make it more inclusive. It's just not how you should go about things unless your intentions are to create unnecessary discourse. Just let people choose between the old avatars and the new ones, and keep adding more body-type options to the game in future updates. It's that simple. Some people are pencil thin and look like super-models, others have a full six-pack, some have more average proportions, others are rather short with a stockier frame, and so much more. If you're really interested in being inclusive, make the game more inclusive; for everyone and not just the people you think deserve it.

The lead team manager's reply sounds very insincere, like they sat down and just typed up something very fast and don't really even care that people are pissed about the changes and the fact that it's just horrible, shoddy work in general.
They just uploaded that you can change your eye color in the new update lol they're doubling down on the new avatars. I just unninstalled it, there's no way they are going to listen to the fanbase, Niantic very rarely does.

The avatars don't resemble real people now. Women have hips and they got rid of them. Why ruin these characters and make them oddly shaped. You can put breasts on a male character, but can't increase their hips? Why are the old body types not an option now?
I haven't played in years ever since the pandemic occoured and we were all in lockdown. They offered us trades across the world, free remote raid passes and actually seemed to care. Then not even a week later all of that was reverted and people were getting sick to hunt shinies at raids in person and trade for luckies.
