I get it in the cases of some outright stupid battles Ash should’ve lost the way they were written like when he battled Drasna and Steven Stone, but a lot of the time it’s just a bunch of lame excuses for the other character to win. These people tend to nitpick the battle to make it look like Ash had some kind of super lucky, and while there are definitely moments like that… y’all realize this can also be done in reverse, right?
A good example of this is Ash vs Cynthia, because I see people saying Ash only win that because of plot armor, “because Cynthia only had dragon type moves and stealth rock instead of a ground type attack”, “because Cynthia didn’t use Max Mindstorm to disable Bullet Punch”. But what they’re ignoring is that there’s actually a moment in this battle in favor of Cynthia that, by their own logic, can literally be labeled as blatant plot armor: base Togekiss vs base Lucario
When Togekiss and Lucario first battled, Togekiss made Lucario flinch with air slash. Uh… how the hell did that happen? Shouldn’t Lucario be immune to flinching thanks to the ability inner focus? Or have gained speed thanks to Stedfast? And I doubt Lucario has the ability Justified, otherwise we’d have seen it like we did with Gallade. This series tends to put enthusis on abilities more than the other series’ tend to, so there’s really no excuse for this
“Oh but for Cynthia it wasn’t plot armor because-” insert lame excuse, right?
My point is that you can nitpick any battle in the anime, apply this kind of logic, and label these moments as “plot armor” and it would not make one lick of a difference. I mean, why did Leons Dragapult’s Thunderbolt just conveniently give Lucario paralysis? How did Melmetal two-shot Kukui’s Empoleon despite using a move it had a quad resistance to? Why do Pokémon always look and act like they’ve healed after evolving mid-battle? Do you see what I mean? That’s a pretty L mindset to have when watching a Pokémon battle in my opinion
