Im still a little confused on when your fresh Gmax mon surpasses your powered up Dmax… I feel like I should stick with my level 40, all moves unlocked Dmax Gengar over a Gmax I just caught with no power ups…

Few things to note, Max Gaurd is useful more than what LiftingandZombies has mentioned, Max Gaurd is more likely to have the boss target the Max Gaurd user, this can mean that attackers can have a easier time dealing damage while charging the Max meter even faster than the other pokemon.
I got shiny gmax gengar on first raid
So still nothing for rural players. My group isnt even 10 people and the closest I have to go is 2 hours away in my capital city. Gigantamax makes no sense. It’s just a cash grab from Niantic because they know the game is slowly dying 🙌🏻
