Conary (coal+canary) is based on a canary in a coal mine. canaries are sentinel species historically used in coal mines to detect carbon monoxide and other toxic gases. Similarly, a Conary is used in caves to detect but aren't immune to toxic gas poisoning.
Once a Conary dies (or faints in battle at a certain level) inside a cave, it evolves into Canthasma (canary+phanstasm+asthma), now a ghost/poison type that dwells within the depths of a cave where the air is highly toxic. It has now adapted to the environment and gains the ability to poison the air wherever it goes. (coz trainers would have to bring them out of the cave when they caught one)

to be specific, Conary needs to faint from poisoning while insided a cave in order to evolve
I think a ghost/flying with a poison-related ability would work better, because no Pokemon has ever evolved into something with no shared type before aside from Eeveelutions and Alolan Marowak
Can only think of Swablu into Mega Altaria (Normal/Flying into Dragon/Fairy)
Though it is a rare scenario, there’s no rule against having a Pokemon share no types with it’s pre-evo.

I would die laughing if something like this ever became a regional bird. Seriously, this is a very creative spin on the “canary in the coal mine” concept, and the type change isn’t an issue. A lot of so-called “rules” are just trends that haven’t been broken yet.
Cubone evolving into alolan marowak shares no types, so it’s not unprecedented. Do whatever you want, have fun with it!

Technically, yes. Cubone in Alola go from pure-Ground to Ghost/Fire when becoming Alolan Marowak.
Oh it’s based on cave canaries. I thought it was based on those little birds that people eat whole. The little bird is called an ortolan. Another great option for this concept
I think ghost/flying would be a better typing. Ghost being weak to psychic makes it a pain since ghost is one of psychic’s weaknesses.
I really like canthasmas name because in spanish it sounds like cantar(sing) + fantasma(ghost).
While a regional form, I’d like to remind the court of Alolan marowak. A ground type Cubone evolving into a fire/ghost marowak.
Also, Eevee evolving into 8 different types, now of whome share the initial normal type.
Also also, prior to gen 6, the normal type azurill evolving into the water type marill.
So yeah, this is A-OK
This would be very interesting. Pokémon wouldn’t normally do it probably trying to keep things relatively consistent, but lore wise, it’s a great concept!
