Pokemon Trading Card Game

The waste from TCG card packs is actually kind of insane

I’ve been in this hobby for a decade now, and I love it. But every time I open a booster pack, I get hit with the same thought. Why is this still wrapped in single use plastic, even after so many "sustainable" reforms by other huge brands?

Think about how many packs are opened around the world every day. Multiply that by how many are in one box. Then multiply that by every store, every event and every collector. That’s a huge amount of plastic used once and thrown out immediately. It’s not recyclable in most places either, because the flimsy LDPE that its made out of is rarely recycled (apparently less than 10%). It just sits in landfills, burned in the incinerator or ends up in the ocean.

Other companies have started switching to paper packaging that’s actually recyclable. LEGO is doing it. Other TCGs are looking into it like Flesh and Blood. So why not Pokemon? They have the money and the resources to make the change. And honestly, with how global and influential the brand is, they should be leading the way on this because this hobby is producing so much waste every year.

A few of us started a petition to ask TPCi to reduce the plastic waste in TCG products. You can check it out here if you’re interested:

Would really appreciate if you would take a look and consider signing above, or even a share if you want to reduce all of this waste too 🙂

PS: read my commented response (the petition will aim to ask TPCi to reduce all the single use plastic waste esp those "placeholders" in boxes, i feel now that those might be more useless than the pack wrappings). thank you all so much for the input!
