  1. No, because it’s not called dkc 64.
And since dkc returnes and dkc tf, dkc will always be 2d.

It’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It wears elements on the surface that suggest it being a DKC sequel – namely its characters and settings. But the flesh underneath, the gameplay, bares essentially no resemblance to its predecessors, being all about collection and no actual platforming whatsoever (when platforming and collection were blended together in the DKC trilogy). In truth, it’s more of a Banjo Kazooie spiritual successor, but what baffles me is that Rare did so many things wrong that they did right in BK and immediately after in Tooie.

At least with Super Mario 64, you could make an argument that it is a highly transformative follow-up to the previous games, but a follow-up nonetheless, since the gameplay follows the barest elements of a Mario game (since collecting non-Castle/100 coin Stars take you out of a level, essentially you are entering a level and reaching a goalpost of sorts). DK64 doesn’t even do this.

DKC are 2D are more focused on platforming. DK64 follows the phylosophy of BK/64; worlds more “worlds” than a serie of platforms to go throw. Of course that’s how I see it

I consider it part of the overall Donkey Kong franchise, but not the Donkey Kong Country series. That’s like asking if King of Swing and Jungle Beat are from the Country series – yes they all involve DK, and one even has the Kremlings, but they’re that much of a departure from the gameplay that they can be considered something else entirely.

I want it to be a separate series so that it can eventually get a sequel.

DK64 is not a sequel, but a game that thematically makes sense with the DKC trilogy since both were made by Rare. The way I see it, DK64 is as close to DKC games as DKCR and DKCTF are, but in different ways. Aesthetically, DK64 is closer to DKC, but gameplay-wise the revival games are obviously closer. They’re two different branches of a same parent.

It is a Donkey Kong game, but not a Donkey Kong Country game

Hot lord no lmao. Dkc 2 all the way. The music, platforming, controls, ugh it’s almost perfect.

  9. I know I’m in the minority and this is okay, but growing up DK64 was my favorite game in the DK series and my favorite platformer on the N64.

I’m a big fan of 3D Platformers, games with Jungle settings and DK. 64 seemed like a perfect match for me, but once I got it, I never could fully get into it. I often got lost and at times had no idea what to do. I didn’t like character specific items to get either. I get the idea behind it, but that doesn’t make it an automatic good idea. I only got into like 3 or so levels in then didn’t go back. Hopefully Yooka Laylee hits the good spots for me more, when it ever comes to Switch that is.

I consider it as canon(for whatever that’s worth) and officially part of the DK universe, but IMO a game needs to be a 2D platformer to be a DKC game.

No. There’s no Country in the title. Returns and Tropical Freeze went out of their way to throw the “Country” in there.

DK64 is a standalone DK title which we sorely need a sequel to. I can see it once Odyssey kills sales numbers. DK64 was okay but I know they could make an amazing sequel if they followed Mario’s footprints.

Hmm… I wouldn’t have back then, but I think I would now… kind of. When I think DKC I think side-scrolling action. DK64 has the closest connection re: characters and developers, but is a departure gameplay-wise.

In hindsight, DK64 was just as much a sequel to DKC as Mario 64 was to SMW… which is to say, not the same, but definitely a continuation. It just didn’t seem that way at the time, probably because it felt more like a new Banjo-Kazooie game whereas SM64 broke new ground and claimed its own genre.

Diddy made it complicated at 1st.

    He was a DKC staple

If Dixie and Kiddy were there I would have easily considered this part of DKC.

Now that we’ve seen Diddy around a lot without being DKC I can sya no.

But at the time…Donkey and Diddy, Kremlings and Rare…it was as DKC as 3D could be

i consider it as a spin off, and i grew up with this game. I’m so glad that i did because it was one of the best selling n64 games of all time, won the E3 Game Critics award for Best Platform Game, and multiple awards and nominations from games magazines, as well as adorning 5.27 million gamers collection. I don’t think it’s that hard to see why it was acclaimed.
