Pokemon Trading Card Game

Can we stop doing this?

I’ve seen a million of these posts on this subreddit but I still feel like it’s way too prevalent. Why the hell would I give some random guy a free 20% win? Because they said so? If card stores or vendors said this, it’s understandable since they have to pay for rent or for the table fee. But you’re not a card store or a vendor. We’re meeting in a gas station parking lot.

This is awesome, would love to see the reply they sent

People watch too many vendor POV videos.

Had a similar situation happen but at an LCS. Wanted a yugioh card that was worth 10 dollars, and the guy said “offer” and I kept giving him the prices. After refusing to tell me what he wanted and after his third “offer” response I straight up bought the card off of tcgplayer for under 10 bucks and just ignored him after he realized I wasn’t kidding.

I got back into collecting by ripping some packs and thought “oh cool I can trade a bunch of these hits that I don’t really care for” and then very shortly afterwards realized that trading is a joke at least here in the US.

I stopped buying packs, started buying singles, and now I plan to simply give away all of those hits.

It’s funny because vendors do 80% because they pay for tables at a card show and they’re providing that as a service. But when they bring those rules over to FB Marketplace it shows how not only delusional they are but they’re just copying what others do without understanding why.

Some scalper (he admitted to it so it’s not just me hopping on that bandwagon of calling anyone who isn’t me a scalper) wanted a 75% trade recently, while picking through my cards for his personal collection. My brother in Arceus, if you’re cherrypicking my collection and you don’thave real overhead, we’re doing an even trade or you can suck my Wigglet.

I personally think this always depends on how the trade is going down. When I’m selling parts of my PC, I usually want straight up cash. Unless you have something that I really want to add to my PC, I’m not looking to trade. The only way that I’m going to take slabs/singles that I didn’t want in the first place is if: (1) I can sell them for cash, and (2) If I can make a little bit more money off of those items.

All I’m trying to say is, did you reach out to the seller first? And did he ask for a trade or did he ask for cash? Because if the listing specifically asked for cash and you’re offering a trade + cash, I think the seller’s ask is fair, especially if he listed his item for under market.

Too many people in this hobby have content brainrot

  8. For the 1000000th time if you think you can get more cash value then someone is offering you in a trade for it – save both parties the time and DO IT!

  9. ItsEthanSeason

If both people want the cards, it should be 100% buy/sell price. If you offer me a card I don’t want in a trade, I would either say “no deal” or “80%”, and the other person can say “no deal” or counter

  10. FlyAwayAccount42069

People in this hobby are top tier greedy, they always want the best deal only for them 😊

  11. Spaz_Destroya

Even if a vendor gets their table for free, there’s still a lot of time, effort, and travel involved. so they generally still aim to make some margin. The free table just lowers costs; it doesn’t remove the need to profit.

As for 1:1 trades, they usually only make sense if there’s a clear value shift, like consolidating several lower-end cards into something more liquid or in-demand. Without that kind of edge, most vendors (or even collectors on marketplace) won’t have much incentive to make the trade.

  12. TimeWizard90

You have the freedom to say yes and no….. you sound like a clown coming here to co
Plain about it. Just say no I’m not fine with the trade and move on.

  13. Vinicio_Caro

Not everyone wants your cards as a trade. If I want something of yours I’ll trade at 100%, but if it’s not something I want then 80% is fair. I can list it on eBay and break even after shipping and fees.

  14. throwawayandtoday

Better yet tell them you trade at a lower percent

  15. al_capone420

If he’s trying to sell cards for cash and you are just giving him yet another card to sell, then yes him offering 80% for the extra work he has to do selling more cards now is fine.

If he was asking to trade originally then offers 80%, that’s fucked up.

Based on context, it looks like the first one

  16. CHEROKEEJ4CK

If you don’t like it move on? I don’t sell or trade but who cares. If he misses the sale or trade than that’s on him, if someone agrees good for him.

Why cry on Reddit about it?

  17. Battlejoe

I do trades at 100%. The fuck is this stupid ass sneaker head bullshit

  18. AdiS91812

People need to realize legit trades happen at your LCS. This is how it’s always been for me

  19. forest_hills

I don’t understand the anger because it looks like you were the one proposing the trade. He will take the cards you want so he is free of saying that lol for context: I’ve never done a Pokémon tcg trade.

  20. Miserable_Peak6649

If they have it listed for sale and aren’t really looking for trades I can KIND OF see wanting a favorable trade. But if they say anything in their listing about trades welcome they can get bent with this 80% thing.. Like you said, totally understandable if you are paying rent or a table fee, but even then if your just some random nobody 80% at a table is a joke.

The big notable sellers that everyone knows and trusts get 80%. Joe Schmoe in the back corner is not getting the same rates as the reputable sellers.

  21. khalil1106

always counter their % with a higher percentage and ask what they’d like to do to make up for the difference

  22. Did he ask if you had a Giratina?

Or are you asking if he wants to take random cards instead of cash, so he has to try to turn it into cash himself – thereby costing him the eBay fees, or risking the very high likelihood of not being able to get “market” price for it on fb marketplace, etc?

  23. chewbaccashotlast

Why does everyone jump to a conclusion?

    The interaction is missing context.

Trades never have to follow full market value unless both sides agree to that and both want the cards.

I’ve traded in my favor and in the other persons favor. It all comes down to what you’re willing to trade. There is no such rule that says you must calculate the market value of each and they must be the same.

Again, no context of the conversation so yall can harp on the person all you want but you don’t know the discussion before that led to it

  24. i mean come on. unless the guy is searching for your specific cards why would he take that?

  25. Hololujah

This is one of the brightest red flags when selling.

People who claim they only pay “x” percentage without even establishing current market value? I walk away every time.

These are the people who will 2 weeks later threaten a negative review if you dont offer a partial refund or some other scumbag move.

If it looks like a duck….

  26. BooSkittle

Im stealing this. I tried selling my umbreon and someone said the same thing.

  27. Foraging_For_Pokemon

Really depends on the trade and the initial post. If in my initial post I say I want cash, and you offer a trade…well. If it’s not one card, with equal stable value vs the cash I said I wanted, or it’s multiple cards that I’ll now have to do more work to sell and make the same amount of cash…yeah, I’m taking them in at a percentage.

  28. BibendumsBitch

If you’re wanting to sell to any store or eBay you’d pretty much only get 70%. 80-90% is a win for both parties

  29. androidsheep92

It’s also a highly wanted PSA 10 card, it’s easy to get market for it, why on earth would someone expect to get 80% trade in their favor for a card they are wanting, defeats the whole point of trades being done at lower percents lol

  30. AllD33zNutz

The worst is when they say they “only do trades in their favor”

  31. Just say no. I understand that it’s frustrating, but they are using the strategy of offering less to create profit for themselves – obviously you’re not going to like that, but it’s clear they don’t want the card at market or they would have just done it at 100%. If that’s a “no,” then just say so and move on.

Not every deal is going to be a good one.

  32. nate68978263

The only reason I can see people doing this is because cash is king.

If I’m selling a card for $100 and you offer four $25 cards, I’m not taking it even though it’s a straight 1:1 trade.

The reason why is because now I have to sell four cards at $25 to make the original $100 I requested in cash.

It realistically takes more time to sell four cards than one card, and the time it takes to sell those cards has value.

All of that to say, people who are open to trades and spit out this percentage nonsense are scum.

  33. slimy-salad

MF you’re the one initiating the trade you’re going to come out on top he’s getting something he probably doesn’t want while you are. He’s being honest with you which should honestly stop at this point bc all it’s causing is morons like you posting shit like this every week thinking you’re in the right.

  34. Maximum_Technology67

The only way this makes sense is if he’s asking for cash and you bring up the trade. Trade is worth less than cash to me. If they bring up trading and then hit you with the percentage then it’s just them watching to much YouTube.

  35. MathematicianSea4674

Depends, if they’re wanting cash and you instead offer them something they have to do extra work to turn into cash, valuing at a percentage is the only thing that makes it worth it. If they post something specifically saying they’re looking to sell *or* trade though, then yeah it’s a dick move to play the percentage game.

  36. SorrowfulKnight

To each their own, but what a shit hobby. I don’t understand how you guys have fun trading cards with eachother, specially when 90% of people are just trying to make money.
