I still think the biggest Earthbound fan is Reid Young, considering he made a living out of being an Earthbound fan

I know someone like this irl.

This is pretty spot on. Most “earthbound fans” I have met in my city have either never played the game or haven’t completed it. I found each of these folks because they were wearing earthbound clothing items (ness hat, ness shirt, backpack, etc), I might add.
TheBrianJ
I laugh, but this is pretty much my relationship with Killer7.
I love the game, I’ve watched numerous playthoughs, I know the backstory and the cutscenes and the stories behind the game, but I have never actually played it.
AntiChangeling
Perfect. This is proper satire – slightly absurd, but with enough of a seed of truth to hit a slightly uncomfortable nerve.
tiglionabbit
I’ve never finished Earthbound. I sometimes mention it in lists of good SNES games because I feel pressured to, because I know someone will bring it up, but the truth is I just don’t like RPGs much. I mean, I like Mario RPG and FF6 but that’s about it. I don’t even have the patience to play through Chrono Trigger a second time even though I know there’s lots of endings. I got Earthbound on my 3DS now though so maybe I’ll finally play through it on a plane trip or something. And Chrono Trigger is on mobile phones now…
However, I love what Earthbound represents. It has a quirky type of comedy to it that has inspired a passionate following that has produced things like HomeStuck and UnderTale which I enjoy.

I got my copy in 1999 (ish) when a small locally owned video rental store “Video Magic” went out of business. It was there with a $4.99 price tag. I snagged it up immediately having rented it many times from there before.
How can you be such a big fan if you’ve never played it? I was 7 years old when the game was released and around 10-11 is when I finally sat down and beat it. Still is my favorite game of all time but even after completing Mother 1 2 and 3 I don’t feel confident enough to make a website dedicated to my obsession with it.
Dogmodo
It’s OK to be a fan of a game you haven’t played.
I love the Mega Man games, but am no good at the jump-n-shoot. That doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the clever level and boss design. I just have to do so vicariously through others.
JacksLantern
Its weird, Mother 3 is my favorite game but I can only get so far through Earthbound before getting bored and annoyed by the dungeons, but at the same time not nearly as many people think of the series as Mother because Earthbound is the big famous one so do I call myself a Mother fan or an Earthbound fan? hmmm
downztiger
Site is down. Anybody got a copy of the article?
Beak_Pirate
I first played it when it was first available on Wii U virtual console. Beat it and can honestly say that it’s a game that warrants a lot of praise.
Cait326
I’ve played (and finished!) Earthbound more times than I can count. Hands down my favorite game on any gaming system! I also had the walkthrough guide with the weird scratch n sniff cards in it. My favorite was the banana, least favorite by far was the mushroom. But for some reason I kept smelling it. I’m a glutton for punishment.

i think earthbound has such a cult around the idea of it and the style but far less people want to put in the time to it from start to finish
it is pretty lengthy and parts of it show its age. i love every bit of it though but its not exactly casual
linuxhanja
I remember asking a friend to go with me to a big box store, I was going to buy Super Mario World 2 which IIRC had released relatively recently (keep in mind we knew of releases from Nintendo Powers, or monthly periodicals, so I could’ve been a few months earlier, idk. Anyway, I pick up the last copy, $49.99. My buddy is walking along the rest of the SNES aisle, and there is just a shelf loaded with those huge Earthbound boxes (since the players manual was inside), and he just grabbed 2, said it was a great deal, and said I should get one. He’d rented the game and really enjoyed it. I *was* a bit of an RPG fan, and I had or went on to play CT, FF3, SoM… but I’d had really bad experiences with non-Squaresoft RPGs, or games I didn’t know about, and preferred to rent first, and I had no idea what Earthbound was, besides something that had cluttered up my Nintendo Power with stickers and ads and shit. The advertising was so bizarre, and I didn’t know what the game was about, so I didn’t pick up any. kick myself over it, but, otoh, even after playing and enjoying Earthbound two or three times, I’d say SMW2 is still the better game (for me), and I got a lot more enjoyment out of it. I remember I had brought just enough cash to buy SMW2, and my buddy offered to lend me the $5, but I declined.

I will proudly admit I despised Earthbound when it first came out, and still have not played it much to this day. To me, it felt far too mundane. I’d been spending all my days of the SNES era immersed in FF6, Chrono Trigger, Zelda ALTTP, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Illusion of Gaia… fantastic games with fantastic settings. In comparison, Earthbound’s setting and characters felt too close to home and reality to me. I just couldn’t get into it. I am not upset in the slightest that I can’t get my hands on an Earthbound cartridge even though I collect NES and SNES games.
I have a SNES Classic now, and I intend to finally buckle in and play it in the coming year, but it’s definitely not big for me.
That brings me to this concept of being a fan of something you’re not actually that into. It blows my mind frequently that people do this, and it’s all just for outward appearance. It’s to be part of something. I used to see it all the time with anime, and I bet it still happens, too. I’m even guilty of it, myself. At one point I claimed to be a big fan of .hack, but I actually had barely seen any of it and it bored me. I did later play and enjoy the .hack/G.U. games, but I mostly claimed to love .hack/Sign and Gunslinger Girl because people I knew were into it, and I wanted to be part of the in group.

This is great! I seriously do remember buying Earthbound brand new at Best Buy for like $20 though. I honestly never thought it would become such a cult classic.
I enjoyed the game, but didn’t find it to be that fun of a game compared to other RPGs of the time like Chrono Trigger.
FatAngryDude
Had a co-worker who was supposed a big Mario fan and has all kinds of Koopa, Peach, Mario, Luigi and Toad figurines on his desk. Same with the Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. I kid you not one day I asked how cool the Classic NES would be to have and he was like “Eh, there’s no games I like on it” and I mentioned “i thought you liked Mario and co?” and he said “Nah, not my type of games. Turned it off by the 2nd or third level on the original and never touched another…” and he had later said “I don’t get what the coins are that Sonic gets everywhere…”
Mind you, his goddamn desk is loaded with these figurines.
Actually, He’s that way with Zelda as well now that I think of it. Never played a Zelda till BoTW and he acts like he was a die hard since day 1.

I wasn’t actually sure if it was satire until I noticed the tag >.>

I was somewhat like this with the Xenoblade Chronicles not getting past 20 hours (which by then you haven’t even gotten the 4th party member), praising the game and even bought the collectors edition of Xenoblade X (Only got through Chapter 1 on that one). Though I was at least self-aware I hadn’t really “experienced why it’s great. Finally beat it last month and now really love it
HyzerFlip
I sold my copy of Earthbound to fund the restart of my life and move across the country.
Most people that talk about earthbound are like this to me.
Thopterthallid
As someone who’s played Undertale, I can safely say I’m probably the biggest Earthground fan out there.
pianoboy8
From responses ITT, I guess I’m one of the few people who actually have beaten Earthbound.
Charles-Koolaid
I really enjoy playing Earthbound. That man doesn’t look too excited though.
ghettosorcerer
I know it’ll never happen, but as long as the SNES and NES Classics have people talking about these old games again, I would love to see Nintendo run re-printings of their rarest classic titles.
I have an original SNES, and I’d LOVE to play Earthbound on original hardware, but authentic cartridges are going for ~$200 these days.
StrangerSin
if i didnt know it was satire, i’d believe it. i’ve seen too many people do this shit.
chaosdunk69
Thank god, I’ve needed a replacement for P4R gaming ever since it died
AdeonWriter
I love Metroidvania games, But I’ve never played either a Metroid nor a Castlevania game.
Not joking.
MindSteve
This was me with FF7. It lived up to my hype!

I’ve been a “fan” of games that I’ve never played when I was younger.
For example, I absolutely adore the Metal Gear franchise, but have only played Phantom Pain. I watched “movies” of the rest of the franchise that consists of cutscenes with some gameplays that are quite essential to the community/culture (MGS3 ladder scene, etc).

Earthbound is one of my favorite games ever. Probably top 10. When it first released on Wii U VC, I bought it and tried playing it. To my disappointment, I didn’t like it at the time. I loved the art, I loved the setting, and I loved loved loved the music. The problem was that I was getting murdered left and right. It made me remember why I didn’t care for turn-based RPGs.
Fast forward to around Christmas 2015. I had gotten home from work one night and I was bored. I didn’t have anything I wanted to play, so I turned on some TV and switched over to off-TV play. I figured I’d fuck around and do some grinding on Earthbound and maybe try to get into it. An hour later I put the gamepad back and broke out the pro controller and played on TV well into the “Wii” hours of the morning. Ever since then I’ve been in love.

This totally used to be me! I’ve actually played Earthbound a lot but would always hit a wall and never continue… the furthest I ever got was Fourside. I finally buckled down and played through it and I really have to say that while I already appreciated the quirky style and other stuff people mention about this game, something about where the story goes in the latter half really pushed Earthbound into “favorite games of all time” territory for me.
I’m really glad I actually finished it! If you are a fan of the idea of Earthbound, I definitely recommend playing the game. It’s probably even better than you yourself have realized!
ArcticFlamingo
Lol totally me. I started playing on the WiiU years ago but didn’t get very far.
I’m not a huge fan of Earthbound but would be very welcoming to a new release on the Switch.
Actually I kinda hope this comes to VC on the Switch so I can play on the go and maybe actually finish the damn thing
I loved this game. I haven’t touched it in years so I pretty much forgot everything about it. I still love it though. I hope they remake it for the Switch. Either a full 3D remaster or a virtual console of the NES.
HBreckel
I gotta say that as someone that’s probably been playing videogames longer than most the people here have been alive, the amount of gatekeeping in these comments is so disappointing. I’ve been around to play the start of every Nintendo franchise to come out since Mario and Zelda, and I’m just happy to see people loving the games and franchises I’ve always known to be great. Let people have fun, no one needs to take a written test to be a gamer or a fan of X franchise.
