I will preface this post by admitting that my earliest experience in playing Pokemon was the Generation 3 games (Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, Leaf Green, Fire Red versions), and I grew up playing and replaying them for years, while also playing the new series games as they came out from Gen 4 onward. My original most favorite Legendary was Rayquaza, as the first set of games I played were Ruby/Sapphire, but Mewtwo was always a close 2nd.

Mewtwo has a design that I find very simple, and not over the top (not surprising for a Gen 1 mon), but still has the detail necessary to convey just how much danger and power it exudes. My most favorite in-game representation of Mewtwo is it's Fire Red/Leaf Green appearance sprite in particular[Slide 2]. Even the original display of it in Gen 1 makes it look like a terrifyingly powerful Pokemon, despite the limitations Gen 1 games had for aesthetics. I may be on an island with this, but I'll gladly profess that I think Mewtwo is still in the upper crust of all-time Pokemon designs even today.
- Mewtwo was seemingly THE original meta in competitive play for a number of reasons, which all I won't list, because it would make the post entirely to long to explain in detail. But being it was arguably mostly responsible for the introduction of Steel and Dark types in the Generation 2 series, and boasts an incredible 680 base stat total, which rivals and even clears some 3rd stage, Mega-Evolved Pokemon (starters), it was a very prominent figure in competitive play for a long time, especially being it was given a set of Mega Evolutions of it's own come Gen 6. Bug was it's only pure weakness [in Gen 1], and even in Gen 2 it was still prominent due to it's immensely deep move pool through TMs, even with Steel and Dark types present to try to help stymie it's gripping dominance. It was a Pokemon you always feared and prepped for.
- The lore behind Mewtwo, is one of my favorites, and its showing in the original Pokemon Movie added to the allure of this already renowned and feared Pokemon. Mewtwo's quote about the circumstances of birth and Life still is one of my favorite, and it was portrayed as an invincible, untamable beast of a specimen in this movie. Mewtwo is still one of the most iconic Legendary Pokemon, and Pokemon overall, for these reasons, and more.
Bonus: and lastly, it's an awesome character in the Super Smash Bros. Games.
What are your thoughts on the total timeline of Mewtwo as a Pokemon?
