Over the last 3 days I’ve been party play resetting rigorously to get some megas that haven’t been available to me AFAIK since I started playing again in January.
I noticed you can get 10 Mega Gengar energy for catching 25 Pokemon in ultra balls OR defeating 4 team go rocket grunts and 20 Mega Sableye energy for winning 2 raids.
To reroll party tasks, you must join and leave a party to then create a new one to see another 3 party tasks with no consequence, other than what looks like some kind of memory leak the more parties you join and leave. We will call this a reset or reroll. After resetting around 40 times the game significantly loses frames and requires a restart to have more than 10fps (I’m on latest gen iPhone) and the other is an iPhone 13 which will crash regularly after around the same 40 resets right after joining the group.
Sableye I finished in less than a day, I seemed to get lucky on the rerolling, combined with remote raids it was pretty easy.
Gengar energy has taken an absurd amount of time. I have spent around 5 hours JUST rerolling to get a mega Gengar tasks, currently sitting at 160/200 to mega evolve. I’d say on average it took me 18m to secure a Gengar task each time, and at my longest for 1 task it took 45 minutes of rerolling. This time does not include completing the task, simply rerolling.
14/16 Mega Gengar tasks were to catch 25 Pokemon in Ultra balls, the other 2/16 were to defeat 4 Rocket grunts, which suggests that party tasks are weighted in some kind of way, especially when I don’t recall seeing many alternative energy tasks for the rocket grunts.
It feels like the catch 25 pokemon in ultra balls task comes at about 1/25 screens (a screen having 3 rolls meaning about 1/75 rolls) which then you need to hit the 1/4 roll of Gengar between the Mega Gyarados, Blastoise, Venasaur and Gengar rolls. Weirdly I haven’t seen charizard energy in those rolls, which is odd considering the choices.
The rocket grunt task feels like 1/100 + energy type roll, which seems to have the same rolls as the catch 25 in ultra balls + Pidgeot, but my memory may not serve correctly, I’ll try screenshot findings from now to see what else comes up and post later.
I didn’t plan on analysing this, but after doing it I thought I’d share in case it helps someone doing the same, to let them know what they’re in for.

How many Eeveelution shirt tasks have you had whilst doing this?
Is there only mega gengar and mega sableye energy or is there other mega energy for other Pokémon?
Purely anecdotal without any data to back it up, but I feel like I’ve had a bit more luck getting Mega Gengar tasks after completing any other task in the party first.
I suppose it’s possible the pool of tasks / probabilities change on a 1st task vs 2nd vs 3rd etc, maybe someone else here knows more.
I’m sure these megas will be back in raids this season, though if you can’t raid this is an okay way to get energy. Though, there might be research tasks for these two next month
As a returning player i really wanted gengar mega energy, i tried to create and leave parties around 30 times and never saw this task a few days ago (i have 20
mega energy btw from past tasks). Thank you for confirming it exists because i was starting to believe that it doesnt exist.

Spoiler alert, Mega Gengar will inevitably be back for like a few hours when Mega Lati@s raids end due to a coding error.

Win 2-3-4 raids: Mega Pinsir, absol, sableye.
I got enough energy from that task for My 2 account, save many passes & got’em outside their rotation
That’s pretty hardcore. Sounds like a bit too much effort for my blood (Granted I have both from prior events) but I’d rather wait out the rotation.
I farmed 60 energy a few months back and decided that it was too much work and stopped. I figured I could just get the rest of the energy with just one raid when it eventually comes back. Based on your findings, I think I made the right decision.
I applaud your efforts to make party play work for you. Someday I’ll finish page 2 of the party research.

I did exactly like OP and took me over two weeks back in February to get all the Mega Energies I needed – which were Venusaur, Blastoise, Gengar, Sableye and Pidgeot… Never got any Charizard Mega Energy either… Regarding the lag, I think it is a more recent bug cause I never had that issue when creating/dismantling parties…
When was the most recent time you got the Gengar energy? I’ve been steadily farming up energy that way for a few weeks, but for the last few days, I haven’t seen it at all. Easily spent hours just reforming party repeatedly.
All of them seem to have become far rarer. I got a 2 raids for absol and 4 grunts for venusaur, and those are the only ones I’ve seen in the last 3 days and hundreds of attempts.
I’m at 190/200 and it’s driving me crazy.
Yes! I’m actually in the middle of doing this myself. It’s been almost the only thing I’ve been doing in game lately. I’m at 180 energy. Started at zero only two more to go! A couple of times I used three accounts which nets 15 energy. I assume using four accounts would net you 20 but I have not tried it.
