We would like to inform you that Pokémon names are being unified across India to provide a more consistent experience to all fans. Starting September 25, 2025, Pokémon names in Hindi have been aligned with Tamil, Telugu and Bengali, based on Pokémon names in English.
As you may be aware, some of our services that offer Hindi language support, such as Pokémon GO, had adopted Hindi names for Pokémon from September 2023. The change in Pokémon names has already been implemented in the Pokédex on this website. Pokémon names on other services with Hindi language support, including Pokémon animation, Pokémon GO and Pokémon's social media accounts in India will be updated over the coming months.
We believe this change will enhance the experience for the entire Pokémon community in India, making it easier for new and long-time fans to connect with the brand and with each other.
We hope for your continued support as we grow and evolve in India.

What about my Mahaalsi?
Sorry, I know this is tagged “Official”, but who is this saying this? Is this a Niantic associated company, or is this through Nintendo? Or TPC?
In what way are they unified? Does it mean they’re using Hindi for everything, as I only see English or Hindi on the website. (Forgive my ignorance, I don’t know how different these languages are.)
It would be cool if they eventually added Hindi as a supported language in the main series. I started learning it a while back but fell off
I can’t really relate to this feeling, but I’d hate for all the names of Pokemon I know becoming defunct

Interesting. I worked for a Japanese company that had a mobile app with lots of little creatures you could collect, like Pokémon—the devs had largely decided to just romanize the names for the English version of the app, resisting any changes to the names by complaining that it would be impossible for JP and EN users to have the same experience of the same creature was named two different things.
The EN team tried to convince them that unique English names was something users welcomed (backed up by user research), and that Pokémon made it work, as did many media franchises where names were changed to be more palatable to an English audience (some of the Japanese names were either incomprehensible, lacking in meaning for EN audiences, or outright offensive).
Managed to get them to allow us to change a few of the names of creatures released while I worked there, but otherwise they carried on, ignoring the EN team’s suggestions.
