I'm revisiting the Gen 1 and Gen 2 games out of pure nostalgia and having a blast. Seeing all the online buzz about ZA is making me wonder about the viability of transferring Pokemon from Gen 1 all the way up to more modern games.
It looks like some very clever people have figured out some viable ways to get over the Gen 3 hump and all the way through into Pokemon Home. I guess my question is, beyond the "I did that" factor, is there anything that would make it worth it to bring older Pokemon into newer games? Like any stats or move sets that were unique to older gens? I have two Mews and Celebi – would those be unique?

You can if you play the VC versions of RBY (and GSC). They have special icons and hidden abilities when you transfer them. I still have a few in Pokémon Home rn
Not the original Gen 1 and Gen 2, though. Gen 3 completely changed how Pokémon work on a technical level
technically u can recreate that pokemon in pkhex, but most will disagree with this method i guess
Gen 1 & 2 can be transferred into Pokemon Bank, if you’re playing the 3ds releases.
Gen 3 can be transferred to Gen 4, if you’ve got a DS that can load GBA and DS carts.
Gen 4 can be transferred to Gen 5.
Gen 5 can be transferred to Pokemon Bank, from which you can transfer into Gen 6.
Gen 6, and 7 can all transfer to and from Pokemon Bank.
Pokemon Bank can transfer to Pokemon Home, from which you can transfer to and from Gen 8 and 9.
Unfortunately, some of these steps rely on games or applications that were only obtainable via the 3DS shop that is no longer useable, however, it all works if you have the required software and hardware.
Gen 3 is the only generation you can’t get your previous generation’s mons into, and you can’t get your Gen 1 & 2 mons into Gen 4. But they can skip those generations and still be transferrable to current games.
It’s kind of confusing, and I may have misremembered something here or there regarding Bank/Home especially, so corrections are welcome
If you want to transfer the Pokemon based off of benefits, there really isn’t any. I think there might be a ribbon? But as far as online play goes, I’m pretty sure Pokemon transferred from Gen 1/2 are not allowed. Or at least movesets only available through Gen 1/2, mainly OHKO moves that were once TMs
