I have not seen anyone else post confirmation, but with the inventory expansion it is possible to have more than 10,000 of any one individual item. I wondered if it would cap at 9,999 or glitch the display, but this morning through gifts and the curveball task in the current master ball research, I crossed over to 10,009 pinaps.
Why? I use berries extensively for remote berry feeding in rural gyms I spin after returning home from long distance bike rides. A gold badge on a rural gym is like an extra special memento from the adventure. I feed beries in the order they appear in game – raspberries, nanabs, and then pinaps. But with the rural gym scene getting even more stagnant, I haven't needed to use as many berries to take a rural gym to gold before getting kicked out. So the pinaps keep adding up.
After the expansion and as I got closer to 10,000 the game became much more of an inventory management game. So I'm glad that I can start using pinaps again to ease ball pressure. I will go back to feeding pinaps again, even on local gyms, but toss them? Never! It's like throwing away gold.
I think it's funny whenever I see people post about berries negatively b/c to me they are the most valuable resource in the game. Throw away a berry task? Never! The fact that people can play the game in so many different ways does speak volumes to good game design even if the implementation is sometimes problematic.
