I created this microsite (poke-trends.com) to explore 2 decades of Pokémon search data.
Some of my favorite findings:
- Pikachu has 2.5× more Google searches than the #2 Pokémon
- Charmander is the most popular starter ever and MewTwo the most popular legendary
- 7 of the top 10 most Googled Pokémon are from Gen 1. The franchise has added 874 characters since then. Almost none of them broke through.
- The bottom 500+ Pokémon have accumulated essentially zero search interest over 20 years.
- Pokémon GO exploded Pokemon's popularity in 2016 and it's been increasing ever since
- Lucario and Arceus are the only Pokémon after Gen 1 to be in the top 10
