Pokemon Trading Card Game

I realize that I always just assumed that Pokemon would live a similar lifespan to normal house pets (like 15-25 years?) but these cards indicate the lifespan of some Pokemon far exceed that. Gardevoir has spent what looks like 40 to 50 years with her owners!

Your Pokémon will see you wither and die and live its last days remembering you and what was and can never be again.

  2. Pokedex entry for Steelix in Silver:

    >It is said that if an Onix lives for over 100 years, its composition changes to become diamond-like.

Pokedex entry for Ninetales in Crystal:

    >It is said to live a thousand years, and each of its tails is loaded with supernatural powers.

    Wartortle’s entry in Diamond/Pearl:

    >It is said to live 10,000 years. Its furry tail is popular as a symbol of longevity.

And that’s before we get to legendaries!

  3. In the real world pets are a short part of our lives. In the Pokemon world, we are a short part of their lives.

Not all house pets are the same (many birds live for decades), so why would you assume every pokemon would live such a short time? Do you just mean dogs when you say pets?

Gardevoir is a telekinetic humanoid creature. Why would it live less time than a human? Hell, Kyogre and Groudon existed at the creation of the world, and Arceus built the universe. Even on a small scale, real world animals can live for centuries (turtles, lobsters, some jellyfish, etc), so it only makes sense that some pokemon have long lifespans.

I think just like the real world animals, pokemon live for a variable number of years with those in captivity living longer.

I mean even house pets can vary wildly in lifespan depending on species. Dogs and cats might be 15-20 years but people have hamsters (5 years) and birds (50-75 years +) too. There are a lot of different species of Pokemon out there. It would make sense that their lifespans would be quite different too.

The premise of the new horizons show is all about several pokemon from the same team being around for at least 100+ years

Jame’s own carnivine from when he was a child in one of the various mansions his family owns (his family is rich fyi if you watch the anime you’ll know) was in a Pokéball lost in his bottle cap collection from all that time ago. No food, no water, no sunlight or anything. Yet the moment James as an adult finds it again, it is completely 100% fine despite being trapped in it’s Pokéball for the past 20+ years under bottle caps
