Seeking advice for route task

I am a single mother who has a full-time job. All the routes I have done have taken quite a long time. The thought of having to do one for seven days in a row seems really daunting and time-consuming. It says here to “follow“ a route. Does that mean I only have to follow it for some distance? Is completion necessary?
