Haven’t played since 2018. Any tips for a returning player? Did I miss out on the golden age of pokemon?

I feel way over my head. I missed out on some great pokemon and I keep losing all my battles. Seems like all the pokemon plus ➕️ are over $150+. Did the golden age of pokemon pass me by?
