Mega Mewtwo is finally making its debut in Pokémon GO during GO Fest 2026, and this isn’t your normal raid… this is a brand new Super Mega Raid mechanic that completely changes how we battle.
For the first time ever, we’re getting BOTH Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y in raids, and they are easily some of the strongest raid bosses we’ve ever seen. These raids introduce a shield system, meaning raw damage alone isn’t enough — your entire lobby needs to coordinate and contribute with Mega Evolutions to break through.
To defeat Mega Mewtwo efficiently, you’ll need a large group of trainers, all running strong counters AND active Mega Pokémon. Reports suggest each trainer helps break one shield, meaning full lobbies with multiple Megas are key to success.
MEGA MEWTWO X COUNTERS
Mega Mewtwo X is a Psychic/Fighting type, making it weak to Flying, Ghost, and Fairy attacks.
Top counters include Mega Rayquaza, Mega Gengar, Necrozma Dawn Wings, Zacian (Crowned Sword), Shadow Moltres, Lunala, and Rayquaza.
Flying and Ghost attackers perform especially well here, so focus on building teams around those types.
MEGA MEWTWO Y COUNTERS
Mega Mewtwo Y is a pure Psychic type, making it weak to Dark, Ghost, and Bug attacks.
Top counters include Necrozma Dawn Wings, Mega Tyranitar, Shadow Tyranitar, Mega Gengar, Mega Absol, Shadow Hydreigon, Darkrai, and Giratina Origin Forme.
Dark and Ghost types are your best options for dealing consistent damage.
IMPORTANT RAID STRATEGY
Do NOT start the battle with your Mega Pokémon. If your Mega faints too early, your team may not have enough active Mega boosts to break the raid shields when they appear. It’s often better to bring your Mega in later once the shield phase begins, unless you’re in a very large lobby.
COORDINATION IS KEY
These raids are designed to be completed as a team. Make sure multiple players are running Mega Evolutions, and try to coordinate your counters for maximum effectiveness. This isn’t just about having strong Pokémon — it’s about timing, teamwork, and preparation.
GO FEST 2026 DETAILS
Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Global runs from July 11 to July 12, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM local time.
This year’s event is free for all players and includes increased shiny rates, special research featuring Zeraora, rotating hourly habitats, and up to 9 free raid passes per day.
Mega Mewtwo X will appear in Super Mega Raids on Saturday, and Mega Mewtwo Y will appear on Sunday. Defeating these raids will reward Mega Energy, allowing you to Mega Evolve your own Mewtwo. Every Mewtwo caught from these raids will already have a Mega Level unlocked, meaning you can Mega Evolve it immediately without the initial energy cost.
This is shaping up to be one of the biggest events in Pokémon GO history, so make sure you’re prepared, build your teams in advance, and coordinate with other trainers to take down Mega Mewtwo.
