Any idea how we’re supposed to complete this Rockruff research task when I have seen zero spawns in the wild?

You need to evolve your rock ruff
Twice
You’re expected to do at least two raids to get them and evolve both forms. Some challenges need you to hatch things, some to do researches, some to do pvp battles and some to raid.
Rockruff can spawn from the adventure effects of Necrozma Dawn Wings and Dusk Mane but if you don’t have those you have to raid.
It’s a local event with local raids so you have to look around outside to finish that.
