Anniversary: Super Mario First Went ‘New’ 20 Years Ago On The DS

A nice retrospective from Nintendo Life about the first New Super Mario Bros game on Nintendo DS. I can't believe it's already been 20 years since then…

    No.

No, I don’t believe you. The SNES is only 20 years old.

One of the first times in gaming I remember wanting something very very specific, I remember thinking “I wish they made a new 2D mario game… with the graphics of the N64 game” and boom, they did it.

    Mind readers.

The Monkeys Paw affect of course was the soundtrack. Damn that soundtrack sucked.

“new” super mario is now nearly as old as the original SMB was when it came out

Good lord I remember reading about this game and the upcoming launch of the DS Lite in Nintendo Power magazine. 20 years since then is insane to think about.

Let’s not forget the GBA remasters too.

    The chills Tasteless!

But I think it was the Wii first then the DS after.

The article misses out on noting that it had been over a decade since an original Mario side-scrolling platformer had been released. Besides a pair of 3D collectable adventures, were in a dearth of Mario spin-offs and GBA re-releases. It finally felt like Mario was getting back to his roots.

  10. I remember this was a huge deal because we hadn’t had a 2D traditional Mario since World and Yoshi if you count that. It brought back all the stuff 64 and Sunshine left behind. ? Blocks and mushroom powerups and all kinds of stuff.
