‘Pokémon GO’ Community Day: How To Choose Your Shiny Eevee Evolution

It’s Eevee Community Day, and that means there are two twists for those shiny-obsessed endgame trainers.
For one thing, Community Day will last twice as long this time, with a repeat performance in the same time window tomorrow, August 12. For another, there are now five shinies you’ll want to be hunting: Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Umbreon and Espeon, all of which are randomly decided when your Eevee evolves. Randomly unless you use the trick, of course.

Trainers discovered the Eevee evolution trick shortly after the game went live way back in 2016, and were able to use it to round out their Pokédexes with each of what were the creature’s three evolutions at the time. Since then we’ve got two more, but the trick remains the same: if you name your Eevee after particular trainers from the Pokémon anime, you can determine which evolution you’ll get. Here are the names:

Pyro: Flareon
Sparky: Jolteon
Rainer: Vaporeon
Sakura: Espeon
Tamao: Umbreon

Note: these naming tricks are one shot only. So if you’ve already used one to get yourself an Eevee evolution for your Pokédex, you won’t be able to do it again. That doesn’t make them useless: If you know someone that hasn’t used the trick yet you can get them to do it, and then trade from there.

There are two surefire ways to get two of these evolutions, however, and they’re not limited to one use. You have to select the Eevee you want to evolve as your buddy and then walk 10 km with it. After that, you can evolve it–while still equipped as your buddy–during the day to turn it into Espeon, or at night to turn it into Umbreon. You’ll still need to roll the dice on the other three, but this will at least guarantee you two if you can get the requisite shinies.
