Costco Pokémon card line-cutter confronts police in southern Ontario

Police confronted a Pokémon card line-cutter at a Mississauga Costco early Friday morning.

Customers formed a long line, reportedly overnight, for the latest drop of Pokémon cards at the Costco at 3180 Laird Rd., near Winston Churchill Boulevard and Dundas Street.

Posts on social media noted a new release of cards was expected at some Costco stores on Friday.

“Ascended Heroes Mini Tin 5-Packs are expected to drop at select Costco Canada locations on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2026,” one post read.

The card packs were expected at the Laird Road Mississauga store and a Newmarket Costco.

Police officers were brought into the Mississauga location to control the expected crowd.

“This morning at approximately 4:30 a.m., police were monitoring a lineup at a business in the area of Ridgeway Drive and Colonial Drive in Mississauga as part of a paid duty assignment,” a Peel Regional Police spokesperson told INSAUGA Canada.

One person was reportedly trying to take a spot in the line.

“While monitoring the lineup, officers observed an individual repeatedly cutting in line,” the spokesperson said. “The individual was directed to leave the area and complied without further incident.”

A video posted on Reddit, titled “Costco Line Cutter vs Police for Pokemon Cards at South Mississauga,” shows a Peel Regional Police officer asking one person to leave.

The officer puts his hands on a male and says, “Get out of here.”

The person, dressed all in black and wearing a black mask, tells the officer that he knows his rights.

Dozens of people are outside the Costco watching the interaction. Some people shout “Hold the line.”

Another person says, “Please, I am begging you, don’t mess this up for everyone else.”

There is a brief confrontation, and the male points at the officer, but he then turns around and leaves.

Huge lines for Pokémon cards have been a regular occurrence at Costco stores.

This spring, chaos broke out at the Heartland Town Centre for another Pokémon card drop. On April 11, huge crowds pushed into the Costco on Laird Drive and, once inside, loaded shopping carts with boxes of cards.

People are typically trying to get particular types of Pokémon cards. The rare cards are randomly inserted into packs contained within the boxes people are lining up for. These rare cards can sell for thousands of dollars.
