Pokemon Go Quick Guide: How to Battle in Gyms | by Rion

A quick guide on how the mechanics of Pokemon Go Gym Battles work.

So you guys are finally level 5, you head down to your local gym, you hit start, and then what? It’s a little different from what we are used to seeing. Unlike in other games instead of taking turns choosing 1 of 4 possible attacks, in Pokemon Go you only have 2 different kinds of attacks.You have your primary attack, and your secondary attack or your special ability. Depending on which Pokemon you have you can have a possible 1 of 2 primary attacks or 1 of 3 secondary attacks.

Besides your primary and secondary attack you can also dodge in Pokemon Go. To dodge all you need to do is swipe left or right on screen. During battle you’ll notice certain enemy projectiles; if you get the timing just right, you’re able to dodge these and the game will let you know when you have dodged incoming damage by popping a little message.

Primary Attack: Tap the screen

Secondary / Special Attack: Hold down once you get a full blue bar.

Dodge: Swipe Left or Right after the screen flashes yellow. The timing is roughly 0.5s after the flash appears. Swiping too early after it appears won’t work.
