Pokémon UNITE Shutdown: Ends Mar. 23, 2027 [2026]

The Pokémon Company will end service for Pokémon UNITE on Tuesday, March 23, 2027, at 00:00 UTC, Nintendo Life reported on October 27, 2026. The Pokémon UNITE shutdown covers both the Nintendo Switch and mobile versions. Once the clock runs out, players can no longer log in or fight a single battle. From announcement day to final day, the free-to-start MOBA has 147 days left.

In Japan, the cutoff lands at 9:00 a.m. JST on the same date, according to the Pokémon UNITE Asia notice. The wind-down starts immediately. Aeos gem sales stopped on October 27 at 05:00 UTC, and so did new UNITE Club memberships and automatic renewals. A special event and a new “library” feature arrive on November 12, 2026.

What the Pokémon UNITE End of Service Notice Confirms

The official notice on the game’s website opens with a thank-you and moves quickly to the bad news. The operating team wrote, in the first line of the end-of-service announcement on the official Pokémon UNITE site: “We regret to inform you that service for Pokémon UNITE will end on Tuesday, March 23, 2027, at 00:00 UTC.” The notice adds that the date applies to both the Nintendo Switch version and the mobile device version.

That detail matters because some headlines name only the Switch. Nintendo Life’s headline does, and its body text clarifies that the closure applies to “both the Nintendo Switch and mobile device version” of the game. Any claim that the mobile app survives is wrong based on the official notice.

Here is the short list of what the announcement establishes:

What the notice does not contain is just as telling. It gives no reason for the decision, no player count, and no revenue figure. We found none of those numbers in the official text or in the Nintendo Life and Anime News Network write-ups, so this article does not guess at them.

Key Dates From October 27, 2026 to March 23, 2027

The schedule is front-loaded. The money tap closes on day one, the farewell content opens 16 days later, and the competitive qualifiers start 39 days after the announcement. Then comes a long stretch of roughly 131 days between the November 12 update and the final shutdown. The table below puts the confirmed dates in order, along with the milestones that explain how the game reached this point.

Read the table from bottom to top and the pattern is clear. A game that launched with a cross-platform push in 2021 spent its fifth year losing official esports support, then lost its storefront, then got a farewell. Nintendo Life tied the announcement to talk about a wind-down that began after the July Worlds decision, and a related Nintendo Life headline asked whether the Worlds exit was the beginning of the end. That framing is the outlet’s interpretation, not an official statement.

What Stops Working and What Survives

The notice draws a hard line between two groups of features. Anything that needs the game’s servers dies on March 23. Anything that can be stored locally through the library feature survives, but only for players who act before the deadline. The table summarizes the split.

The creator-content guidelines go away too

One line in the notice will matter to streamers and video editors. After service ends, the “Pokémon UNITE Game Content Guidelines for Online Platforms” will no longer be published or maintained. The company also says it will stop providing support on how to use Pokémon UNITE video and images. The notice does not say whether existing videos must come down, and we will not read a takedown rule into silence.

How the Library Feature Works

The library is the one preservation measure in the announcement. The development team described it in direct terms: “Even after service ends, players who complete the required library data download before Tuesday, March 23, 2027, at 00:00 UTC will be able to use the library feature to view certain records and in-game content.” Players who skip the download lose access to it for good.

Several limits come attached. Library data generally cannot move to a new device. Support for the library will not exist after the shutdown, so a corrupted download or a broken device means no help. The notice tells players to contact support about any issue before March 23 at 00:00 UTC. In practice, that turns the library into a task with a deadline rather than a feature players can ignore until later.

The notice says the library lets players view “certain records and in-game content.” That phrase is deliberately vague. The Asia-region notice names battle records, license and Holowear acquisition history, and similar items, and Anime News Network’s summary repeats the “certain records” language. We have not seen a full inventory of what the library holds, so treat any complete list with caution until the November 12 update ships and players can test it.

What a player should do on November 12

Start the library download on the day the update arrives. There is no benefit to waiting, and a deadline-driven rush in March could overload support queues. Use a stable connection, keep the device you play on, and note that the data does not follow you to a new phone or console. If anything fails, file a support ticket well ahead of the cutoff.

Gems, UNITE Club, and the Money Already Spent

The monetization changes took effect the moment the news broke. IGN’s report on the shutdown flagged the sales suspension in its headline URL and coverage. According to the official notice, Aeos gems can still be spent until service ends, but nobody can buy more. New UNITE Club memberships are closed, and automatic renewals are switched off. Current members keep their benefits through the end of their present membership period.

That structure answers one worry and leaves another open. Players will not get billed again by accident for a game that is about to disappear. But the notice, as published on the English-language site, does not lay out a refund process for unused gems, and we could not confirm one from the sources above. One research summary pointed to refund terms in Japanese-language material, but we could not verify them. Until a named official source states those terms for your region, treat refunds as unconfirmed.

The practical advice is simple. Spend remaining gems on cosmetics or items before March 23, because balances have no stated value after that date. Check the platform store (Nintendo eShop, Apple, Google) for your region’s refund policy on recent purchases. Do not assume the game’s own team will refund anything unless a regional notice says so.

The November 12 Update and the Farewell Event

The development team said it wants to thank players with an event that runs until the service ends: “We would like to express our thanks to everyone by holding a special event until service ends.” The event opens with the update on November 12, 2026. During it, players can collect various items, including UNITE licenses and Holowear that have appeared in the game so far.

That detail suggests a catch-up design. Players who skipped older seasons get a chance to fill gaps in their collections before the servers close. Combined with the library feature, it looks like an attempt to let people leave with a complete record of what they earned. The notice does not list the items, the number of them, or the conditions. Expect the exact rules to come in an in-game announcement closer to the date.

For Pokémon UNITE players on Switch, the shutdown is the departure of one game, not a sign that the platform is going away.

Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo Still Goes Ahead

The competitive side survives the announcement, at least on paper. The official notice says the Pokémon UNITE Aeos Crown 2027 Tokyo tournament, an event for Pokémon UNITE only, “will also be held as previously announced.” Qualifier tournaments start on Saturday, December 5, 2026. Nintendo Life confirmed the tournament remains on the schedule.

The notice does not give the final date for the Tokyo event. A research summary we reviewed claimed the final lands two days before the shutdown, but we could not confirm that from the official text, so we leave it out. What the timeline does show is that the qualifiers begin about five weeks after the announcement. Teams that signed up expecting a long 2027 season now know the game ends before spring is over.

The Worlds decision from July is the context here. Nintendo Life’s related coverage says the game was officially dropped from the 2027 Pokémon World Championships. With the main stage gone, Aeos Crown becomes the last big showcase. A final tournament run, with the game’s end already announced, gives the community a clear goodbye moment.

How We Got Here: A Five-Year Timeline

The official notice thanks players who have been around “since service started for the Nintendo Switch version on July 21, 2021.” Counting from that date, the Switch service will have run for five years and eight months. The mobile version arrived about two months later, on September 22, 2021, according to Anime News Network, which puts its run at five years and six months.

Anime News Network describes the game as the franchise’s first strategic team-based battle game. It pits two teams of five against each other in real-time matches, supports cross-platform play, and lets players catch Pokémon to score points. Each Pokémon has a Unite move that unlocks at a certain level, and the team with the highest score when time runs out wins. The outlet also notes the game is free-to-start with in-app purchases.

Anime News Network adds that the game announced an original live-action short project in June to mark its fifth anniversary. Four months later, the end date arrived. That gap is short enough to suggest the decision came fast, though the sources do not say when it was made. We can only say the anniversary push and the shutdown notice fall in the same year.

Who Built It: TiMi Studio and The Pokémon Company

Anime News Network reports that Tencent’s TiMi Studio Group produced Pokémon UNITE in collaboration with The Pokémon Company. The credits tell us who made the game but not who made the call to close it. The shutdown notice comes from the game’s own operations team, not from a named executive.

No named executive has commented on the reasons in the sources we reviewed. We therefore avoid pinning the decision on a single factor. Any story that blames player decline, revenue, or a partnership change is guessing. The facts on the record are narrower: the Worlds exit in July, the storefront closure on October 27, and the end date in March.

Nintendo’s own console strategy also matters in the background. Players weighing their next purchase can look at our Switch 2 bundle comparison, which covers current packs including Pokopia. A shutdown of one multiplayer title does not change that decision on its own.

Market Impact: What the Shutdown Signals for Live-Service Games

This section is analysis, not reporting. The core lesson is that licensed live-service games face a hard question when engagement drops: keep paying for servers and content, or close cleanly while players still care. Pokémon UNITE chose a planned exit with 147 days of notice. That is a longer runway than many sudden shutdowns offer, and it gives players time to spend, save, and say goodbye.

Publishers across the industry are cutting costs, and the pressure shows up in layoffs and closures. Our report on Microsoft’s buyout offer to 60,000 staff shows the scale of corporate belt-tightening, and our piece on Sony’s silence on a PS6 date as Xbox cuts 3,200 shows the same mood on the platform side. A free-to-start game that needs constant updates is exactly the kind of product a cost review flags.

Players also learn something about digital ownership. A purchase inside a live-service game is a license to use servers, and that license ends with the service. The library feature is a partial answer, since it lets people keep a view of their records. It does not let them keep playing. Expect more publishers to copy this kind of “memory book” approach, because it costs little compared with keeping a full game running.

Confirmed Facts vs. Open Questions

Several posts about the shutdown already mix confirmed details with guesses. The table below separates what the official notice and named outlets support from what remains unproven.

Competitive Comparison: Where Displaced MOBA Players May Go

Mobile and console players who liked the five-on-five format have alternatives, though none of them carries Pokémon characters. Titles such as League of Legends: Wild Rift, Honor of Kings, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang compete in the same broad genre. We make no claim about their player numbers or revenue here, because none of the sources we reviewed gave comparison figures.

The differences that matter to Pokémon fans are qualitative. UNITE’s matches revolve around catching Pokémon and scoring points before time runs out, a model Anime News Network’s summary highlights. Players who want that exact format may find the shift jarring, and none of the alternatives lets them use Pokémon characters.

Pokémon fans who want to stay in the franchise also have retro routes. Our walkthroughs on setting up Pokémon Platinum with melonDS cover the single-player side for people who own the original cartridges. That is a different experience from UNITE, but it shows the series’ older games remain playable long after servers go dark.

Five Predictions After the Announcement

These are our forecasts, based on the timeline. None comes from an official source.

The November 12 update will draw a spike of returning players, because the event hands out licenses and Holowear that were previously hard to get.Support queues will grow in the final month, since the library download is mandatory and fixes stop at the cutoff. The Aeos Crown qualifiers on December 5 will serve as the community’s main farewell moment, with the live final following.Other publishers will copy the library idea, a lightweight offline record, for their own wind-downs.Regional refund notices will appear for some markets before March, driven by store policies and consumer pressure rather than the game’s team.

What Players Should Do Before March 23, 2027

Treat the next 147 days as a checklist. The order below follows the official dates and keeps risk low.

Spend or plan your remaining Aeos gems. Gem sales have stopped, and balances have no stated value after the shutdown.Do not expect UNITE Club renewals. Current members keep their benefits until the present period ends.On November 12, install the update and begin the library data download right away.Collect UNITE licenses and Holowear from the farewell event while it runs.Back up your own screenshots and clips, because the content guidelines for online platforms end with the service.Contact support about any problem before March 23, 2027, at 00:00 UTC. After that, help disappears.
